An art cooperative in an old quarry, worth a stop if you like the unusual in art studios

An interesting collection of art studios, artists and volunteers. We especially enjoyed talking with the sales clerk in the store - a volunteer who was a wood turner. He was very... read more

An interesting collection of art studios, artists and volunteers. We especially enjoyed talking with the sales clerk in the store - a volunteer who was a wood turner. He was very helpful in explaining the art coop and the various studios. Didn't get a chance to talk with other artists, it was too early in the morning apparently. Not a... More

This is an example of something beautiful being made out of the rough landscape of a once working rock quarry, and all through voluntary effort, determination and community pride. Volunteers have been working in difficult conditions for several years, inspired by a person with a horticultural interest who could envisage a transformation in to a beautiful park. He ad his... Great people, so much art and a fine garden. Neat place to relax and be inspired. Swap ideas, thoughts or buy yourself a treat.

This centre is a bit of a work in progress, with lots of quirky art dotted about but not for sale. There are local crafts on sale, but not as much as you might expect but if you're local, you can take classes there. It has the tiniest but friendliest of cafes and staff are welcoming. It's worth a visit... More

Seasoned and budding artists from NZ and overseas live, work, and exhibit here, in unique handcrafted buildings. Family friendly, with an international feel! You can look and purchase all year round. Also people of all ages (including children) learn from experienced local and international artists in the acclaimed summer arts schools - printmaking, sculpture, photography etc. Often events are held... Visited the region and popped in to this venue. Take the time to view the gallery. There is a brief history displayed that make you feel an attachment to the arts centre. We visited a little later in the afternoon so the coffe shop was closed. The shop was open and the staff were very welcoming. Enjoyable visit.

This was a rather odd place. We saw two people there, one was washing his clothes with a hose pipe, the other was a pleasant lady in the gift shop. Apart from these two it appeared totally deserted, except for very loud music coming from one of the buildings. Everything is very tired and in need of a tidy up,... More
