We had a very interesting trip on the river on a renovated paddle steamer with a detailed narrative of the sights to be seen on both river banks. We were there on the day of a raft race, so we were able to cheer on the rafts as we went past, adding enjoyment to our visit!

Came across many guides and ex-guides on the river who were happy to share experiences as we paddled down river or were at campsites. DOC and the local management have provided information boards at key locations so felt we got a good cultural experience.

We used Whanganui River Guides based out of the town National Park in Tongariro. I forget the guides name but he was an English guy who was really good. We had the river to ourselves on s beautiful day. The river is wide and calm so suitable for novices. The bird life is amazing and we made a short stop... More

Drove along the river road, fed the ducks - relaxing just to look at it - took a trip on the paddle boat - after all we was tourists... had lunch then went back for a leisurely stroll, totally relaxing atmosphere and the locals were interesting and enthusiastic about their heritage - parking was easy - loved this day

Maori Historic connections are strong and prominent and the most important aspect of the River. This historic River was the Danube of the Southern Hemisphere in the 19th century with tourists coming from around the world to ride the Riverboats. You can still do this with the Waimarie Riverboat sailing most days in the summer and weekends off season. Our River... More

We slowly drove up the river road, stopping at a marae where we were made most welcome and the old flour mill. Beautiful scenery and very quiet.

Took a hired kyak as a solo for a few days on the river. Teamed up with a team of 4 as solos were not allowed on the river. After the first day and a few duckings I got the hang of it. The weather was glorious, the scenery fantastic, the people lovely and the excitement was absolutely great. Despite... More
