Regenerated bush, about 60 years old in parts. Beautiful ferns and other native plants loving the conditions. Many birds and well worth a visit if you are in Wanganui.

If you in Whanganui, visiting the National Park is a MUST. Although the journey goes as far as 5 days, even a day is sufficient... great jet boat trip up to the stunning Bridge to Nowhere.

We drove around some of this park to see how it would be to return and cycle it on a longer trip - net result is that we're now much better informed and will return to cycle some of area's on our next holiday.

Left Pipiriki at 8:30am and pleased we did as being Summer, it was getting hot by 11am! We were all on mountain bikes having ridden from National Park to Whakahoro (day 1), then to Bridge to Nowhere plus jet boat to Pipiriki (day 2) and then on to Whanganui. It was the longest day (80km) but generally down hill apart... More

if you like your national parks with paved access routes then you're in for a disappointment with Whanganui NP. Its a true kiwi wilderness that you either have to hike or paddle your way in and out. Very limited driving opportunities other then the river road which is a must

Hats off to the roadworkers who manage to keep this road open during winter! What a treat it was to drive through this National Park with all its twists, turns, breath-taking scenery and views! Never a dull moment and a feast for the eyes. Hot tip though - make sure the driver keeps his eyes on the road!!

The Whanganui National Park is a vast expanse dominated by the River. We drove from Ohakune along the old river road to Wanganui. What a drive if you take you time and take in the scenery and breathtaking views. Hardly any traffic This road is now suitable for hire cars although some parts require care. There is a lovely coffee... More

So much to see and if you have time the walks and tramps are amazing Again if you have time a trip on the river is not to be missed down by canoe is a trip I will always treasure But if not then the paddle steamer or a jet boat in that order

A lovely area and best seen from the river. Hire a kyak or take one of the many jet boat tours. If you get a kyak then it's worth doing some preparation before you go! The area is unstable, the main reason why the bridge to nowhere doesn't go anywhere. But view and wildlife from the river is outstanding. The... More
