About
A Margaret River icon established in 1970, Cape Mentelle is one of the region's founding five wineries. Cape Mentelle pioneered many of Margaret River's renowned wine styles and today is a benchmark for the quality of the region's wines. Visit us for a wine tasting in our rammed earth Cellar Door set amongst native gardens, or book in for a Behind the Scenes Tour, walking through the wine making process from the vine to the bottle and explaining what we do to make Cape Mentelle wines so unique. Why not extend the tour to a 120 minute behind the scenes tour that is followed by a degustation, providing a food and wine pairing experience. This private wine tasting matches a selection of delicious local produce to Cape Mentelle wines in our historic Cabernet Cellar. Cape Mentelle also screens outdoor movies under the stars during summer, complete with bean bags, a food truck and a bar, check our Movies at Cape Mentelle Facebook page for the program and booking information.

We were made very welcome for our wine tasting under COVID 19 restrictions. Rachel our wonderful hostess who made us feel very comfortable and provided a very personalised wine tasting, exploring our preferences and also relating lots of interesting information about the grape varieties and wine styles. Definitely worth a visit, but important to book ahead at present.

Dear OZ,
Thank you for your valued review especially during such a challenging time for us all when we re-opened our cellar door in June! We hope to welcome you again in the near future maybe for our outdoor movies in summer.
Best wishes

Pleasant grounds which doubles as an outdoor theater in January. No playground for the kids but a nice cellar door experience. For $10 you get to taste their entire wine list. Didn't get a chance to try attending a movie there but maybe next year.

Dear Em,
We hope to welcome you back to our cellar door and movies under the stars next year when you return to the Margaret River region! Thank you for taking the time to review your experience and maybe a game of petanque in our garden with your family may be fun too!
Until then, best wishes

Crystal clear night, watching a movie outside on bean bags and with a cosy blanket what more could you ask for?! Relaxed and fun atmosphere, beautiful wine from Cape Mentelle to choose from and freshly popped corn. Would do this again in a heart beat, to be honest I don't think it even matters what movie you are watching!

We booked a private wine tasting in the Barrel Room - almost cancelled as 10am was the only slot available but so glad we didn’t. Our host was Jill (I think!). She spent almost an hour with us talking us through the wines and the history of the vineyard. Her knowledge and enthusiasm were impressive. Even better were her descriptions of the dishes she would cook at home to go with each of the wines. We did a few great tastings during our trip but Cape Mentelle was the standout one. We tasted great wines, learned a lot of new things (poodling!) and really enjoyed our hosts company.

Dear Mrs Buchanan,
I am so pleased that you both enjoyed your private tasting in the Cabernet Cellar and I certainly do recall us chatting about food & wine with fervour! We started vintage last Friday with Sauvignon Blanc from Chapman Brook so Frederique is very happy! The 'poodled' Cabernet Sauvignon is ripening beautifully so I hope you will return to our cellar door to taste the 2019 vintage if not before.
Thankyou for your very generous review and best wishes,
Julie

Having drunk Cape Mentelle wines for several years it was a 'must visit' venue during our recent visit to the area..... some people say you should never meet your heroes and I would say that this applies here.....the story of the vineyard that is told at the back of the tasting area talks of heritage, family and caring - the service we got on the day we visited was anything but, yes they were busy but not that busy. The lady who took us through the wines said several times 'this would go with food', did not talk us through what was available, rushed off to talk to some seemingly important French people who she knew half way through our tasting, did not ask if we had any knowledge of the brand etc etc. In the end we just walked out and we could potentially have been big spenders. A great disappointment and based on this vist we are unlikely to drink Cape Mentelle ever again.

Dear Polly,
I am sorry to read that your experience at our Cellar Door was not up to expectations (yours or ours). The team at Cellar Door really are passionate so it is disappointing that you weren't offered our full attention throughout your tasting. Your feedback is appreciated and has been shared with our Cellar Door. Our aim is to always provide all visitors with a great tasting and welcome, and as this wasn't the case for you, my apologies again.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit us again, please do contact me directly so that we can make arrangements. Safe travels in the meantime.
Best regards, Cameron.

I can't think of anything to fault at the summer outdoor movies at Cape Mentelle near Margaret River. The large screen is set up on a beautiful grassed area amongst Karri Trees. Get there by 6pm or 6.30pm if you like to snag the best spots but if you are not fussy then you could arrive anytime up to about 7.30pm. Our movie started just after 8pm.
You won't have a problem filling in the time before the movie starts - gourmet pizza, other hot meals, traditional movie snacks and wine by the bottle or glass are available for purchase prior to the movie, which starts at sundown. You can take your own picnic but not alcohol which you must buy at the venue (it being a winery and all). You can play pentanque and on the evening we were there a fabulous musician provided pre-movie entertainment as the sun went down.
We bought our tickets online a few days before and reserved the optional bean beds for an extra $10 a piece. Well worth it for a comfortable evening. Summer evenings here can be chilly so bring extra layers. Most people brought blankets.
This is a licensed venue so under-18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Wow wow WOW! At the suggestion of my brother we booked in for a tour and food/wine pairing. It was just myself, my partner and our incredibly friendly tour guide (Leeane) doing the pairing but it was an incredible experience. Felt very spoilt! Can’t rate this place enough, loved every minute!

My wife and I really enjoyed this winery cellar door. The wines were great, however the real treat was the fantastic service by Sophia.

We had the pleasure of experiencing the “Behind the scenes tour with food and wine pairing” at Cape Mentelle, hosted by the Rachel. From the moment we arrived, Rachel welcomed us with open arms, took us on a thoroughly educational and interactive journey from being in the vineyards, to understanding production and concluding with a gorgeous private wine and food tasting. We absolutely loved Rachel’s energy, personality and added humor to the experience. We thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to coming back, and would recommend this as a “must do” experience when visiting Margaret River.

We found the Behind the Scenes tour and tasting to be very worthwhile
Kate took us around the vineyard explaining the care taken with the vines which are all hand pruned and the grapes are hand picked. She then took us through the winery where we could taste wines maturing in the tanks. Her presentation was very informative
We tasted 6 wines which were accompanied by appropriate food matching. We had a small group of 7 so there was plenty of opportunity to share our opinions of the wines and to ask questions.
The grounds around the cellar door provide space for families to picnic and children to play
We can now appreciate the processes which go into making Cape Mentelle wines such premium wines
