About
Historical site of what it was like to live in the group settlement times. Group house & schoolhouse with displays that reflect the 1920s living conditions with the outbuilding displaying dairy artefacts, including cow & calf & farmyard machinery. School visits are encouraged & children can bake scones in the old oven & wash & peg clothes on the line, are just a few activities.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was one of the best discovery during our trip down in Margaret River. Entry is supposed to be free as per website with donations appreciated but we were told the entry fee per person instead of free will donations. Lots of precious well preserved and maintained items from the olden days, definitely worth a visit especially if you have children. Staff were lovely and very helpful in explaining and talking us through the history.

A nice little museum worth a bit of a look around. A donation is requested to enter and it is worth contributing for the experience. The settlement is in a very picturesque area.

Free to visit and full of interesting things to look at, so it's great for all ages. Also easy to park and to take a walk into the forest around Margaret River or have a drink in the cafe next door.

The ladies who work here are so helpful and knowledgeable. They assisted me to identify and locate my grandparents who settled in the area in a Group Settlement scheme - these ladies went above and beyond and I am so grateful for their interest in providing me with a heap of information.

This delightful museum run by friendly volunteers, tells the story of the early settlement of the area and I feel this is a must for anyone visiting, re visiting or for locals who live in the district and are nor aware of the history.
The story of the Group Settlement Scheme is thoughtfully told through photos, visual descriptions, and a group settlement house set up as a living display. Times were very tough as the photos and artefacts depict.
Entry is a donation and you could spend anywhere from half an hour to many hours depending on your interest!
Thank you Old Settlement volunteers for bringing history to life!

We went to the settlement with our visitors, we had been there many years ago and it was fascinating, however this visit was entirely deferent, on the last visit there were different things to do in building ( photographer with various cameras, etc), however this time there were just buildings, even though they were locked up due to public holiday, when looking through the windows there did not seem to have the same feel about them which is a shame

Dear Guru , sorry we were closed public holiday but we are a not for profit community service and rely entirely on volunteers so opening hours are usually restricted to 10am to 2pm on holiday periods . Not sure what you mean by different things to do in buildings ( photographer with various cameras etc ) we don’t have photography or camera displays we are an Old Settlement Historical site showing how life was in group Settlement times , perhaps you are thinking of some other location . Please try to call another time and we will hopefully give you a better experience , our volunteers are committed to helping visitors enjoy the site and answer any questions you may have about early history in our area ,

Whether you’re travelling with kids, family, or you are just a bit of a history nerd, the Old Settlement is well worth a visit! Surrounded by lush greenery, this museum beautifully preserves the past and is full of artefacts, insights, facts and scenes reminiscent of the lives of settlers of the 1920s. Such a refreshing place to visit, highly recommend!

We came across this place while going for a bush walk. It's a lovely area, well taken care of by the Rotary Club.
There is quite a bit of history in Old Settlement with interesting information displayed on boards so you can read.
The adjoining park, just across the bridge, would be a great place for a picnic.

Lovely setting and well kept and the banks if the Margaret River. Look for the Marron under the foot bridge over to the township.
