Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Free entry but a donation appreciated. The lady at the reception counter advised that there were two special exhibitions, Doomsday Preppers and Void.
Preppers was on the ground floor, art to some and junk to others, I was among the latter.
Thank goodness for the Void exhibition on the upper floor. a collection of fantastically interpretative paintings by various Aboriginal artists and the story pots by the late Dr Thancoupie Gloria Fletcher, AO. Just amazing and an exhibition to grace any gallery.
The Gallery itself dates to 1907 and served as the Town Hall until 1964. It underwent a variety og uses until renovated and becoming the Art Gallery in 1984. The construction style is Federation architecture and the building is heritage listed. Have a look at the 4.5m high sculpture by April Pine that stands outside the building and titled "Protective Memory",

While wandering around the tourist destinations in Geraldton we decided to go into the Art Gallery. The building was the old town hall, a gracious old building and was converted into the Regional Art Gallery in 1984. Currently there are 2 wonderful international exhibitions. The ground floor houses work of Julie Dowling- the big secrets and the upper floor houses contemporary video and audio work called People like us. Both exhibits are fantastic, allow plenty of time as they invoke lots of thought, contemplation and also entertainment.

We saw a stellar should. What really stood out was the level of explanation per each work of art. The explanation of the iconography within each painting was great

On this occasion the museum was displaying student artwork from local schools which was interesting and highlighted some great local talent. The upstairs area which was supposed to represent renowned artists was a disappointment.

We were surprised to find such a high quality and large gallery in Geraldton and thoroughly enjoyed our visit - it was excellent with someone on the door who knew the art works and could discuss them, a perfect catalogue and a wide variety of art works. We'd go again.

We enjoyed the two exhibitions on show at the gallery and were glad to see photographs and paintings available to those living outside a large city.

My wife & I recently visited the gallery as my wife had read up on it before we left SYDNEY.It was not the exhibition that she was expecting as 4 local artists had an
exhibition of their work solely. We still found it worthwhile & the lady curator or the
receptionist was very helpfulin explaining it to us.

This building was subject of huge debate many years ago when the Council wanted to demolish it.
Eventually people power won over and it became Geraldtons Art Gallery.
Over many years it has exhibited many works and has done the City proud .
However sometimes the building is not always open to the public which is a shame.
The building is a great historical site and has been well maintained right in the heart of the town.
Worth a look from outside but if you can get in when its open you will be surprised.

Added as a tourist attraction in the advertising brochures of Geraldton, it was disappointing to go up to the entrance and find a hand written note to say the gallery was closed, due to a new exhibition being installed. What type of art gallery does this? All the ones we've visited in Australia and numerous ones overseas have a static exhibition you can view daily.

Mary M, the small team here are GRAG are sincerely sorry that we wasted your time during your visit in Geraldton! Unfortunately as you have said, you happened upon the Gallery during the de-installation of the Mid West Art Prize and the installation of our next exhibitions People Like Us, and Yagu Gurlbarl: New works from Julie Dowling. We don’t like to be closed for the week but it is a necessary and routine component of our exhibition calendar. To answer your question, most venues will have to close their doors at the end of each exhibition period in order to safely de-install the previous exhibit and install the next round of artwork. Larger venues, such as our State Gallery in WA are an example of Galleries that have the appropriate resources (space and staff) to stay open whilst cycling through exhibitions. At this time we do not have a static/permanent display as we aim to deliver a variety of different exhibitions to the community every two months. It is our hope that in future, when we have ample volunteers, that each visitor can be greeted during this week so to personally let them know why we are closed and what to expect on the Friday evening’s Opening Night. Again, we apologise for the inconvenience of our routine closure, and we hope during your time in Geraldton you were able to get your cultural fix from other great tourist highlights such as the WA Musuem, ACDC or Yamaji Art. Kindest regards, from the team here at GRAG.
