    Sinking stunned the Australian peple
The loss of the HMAS Sydney was one of the greatest disasters in Australian naval history. In November 1941, the Sydney engaged the Kormoran, a German raider. Both ships were sunk. The Sydney was lost with all hands, 645 officers and crew. The Sydney's fate was unknown for many years, until 2008, when the wreck was found at the bottom of the Indian Ocean. This handsome memorial recalls a tragedy that stunned the Australian public and is still remembered.

    Beautiful Memorial
A lovely memorial to the Sydney, lost in 1941. The 645 souls are commemorated beautifully here with a dove for each one on the cupola. Nice views of Geraldton below and plenty of info boards to explain how the WW2 skirmish happened

Fantastic experience with a great tour guide!
We attended the free tour at 10.30 and due to the heat, were the only ones there. David, our volunteer tour guide, still showed us round and we couldn't praise his demeanour our knowledge enough! Incredibly welcoming, interesting and interested in our journey to Geraldton. But most importantly his knowledge of HMAS Sydney and the symbolism of the memorial was fascinating. We learnt so much and it is such a beautiful space to remember those list. Would highly recommend.

We took the guided tour which is conducted by volunteers at 10.30am daily. Thank you to the volunteers!
Our guide was welcoming, knowledgeable and articulate. He explained very clearly the symbolism of the several facets of the memorial, the sequence and aftermath of the battle that sank the Sydney and how the memorial was designed and built.
None of this was available from signage around the memorial and I do not suggest there should be signage. It would destroy the solemnity of the memorial and could not convey the detail our guide did.

Located on Mount Scott, a high point in Geraldton, the HMAS Memorial initiated by the local Rotary Club in 1998, commemorates the sinking of HMAS Sydney II, 150 KM north west of Geraldton by the German Raider Komoran in November 1941. The crew of 645 men were lost and the Kormoran was also sunk, although there were some survivors who provided the only details of what had occurred. It was an intersting memorial and worth avisit.

A place to reflect and a very moving experience.

A great location overlooking Geraldton and one could almost feel the anguish of the woman waiting for the ship to appear.

Informative memorial with lots of information about the sinking of HMAS Sydney during World War 2. It's a great spot high up overlooking Geraldton so worth a visit for the views even if you're not that interested in history.

The memorial isn't too far from the main Geraldton area. We drove up and there were plenty of parking spaces at the top. The Memorial has free tours every 1030 in the morning made by volunteers. We did make it in time but didn't have the time to follow it.
The memorial has multiple things to see. there is a wall with the names inscribed on them which surrounds the memorial. What immediately takes your eye is the dome in the middle of the area. As you walk around, the flag atop the front part of the ship will probably catch your eye.
From the edges, there are great views of Gerlandton as well as a couple more memorials. One of the more interesting ones is the one with the gull at the base of the fountain. Definitely worth a stop for both the historical remembrance and the views from the top.

This is a must see when in Geraldton. Very beautiful and peaceful memorial with a good view overlooking the ocean. Would be a perfect place to see the sunset through the dome. Been there before but had to visit again. 👍👍👍👍

This is an excellent memorial for those fallen during the HMAS Sydney II battle. My kids enjoyed reading about what happened and the birds that represented the lives lost. It is a nice place to sit and reflect.
