Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Bunbury is also known as the city of three waters as the city is surrounded by Koombana Bay, the Indian Ocean and the Leschenault Inlet. I am lucky enough to live in Bunbury where my friends and I always walk each Sunday morning around Koombana Bay.  The walking track around Koombana Bay is about 5.8km.  It starts at a carpark opposite the Grand Cinemas. You will walk through Queens Gardens along side the waters. There is exercise equipment for public use situated along the track from cross-training, bicycles and rowing etc.  The track  will take you along Austral Parade passing the Parade Hotel and then  you can stroll through very extensive broadwalks along Koombana Drive and then turn into the Mangrove area where members of the public can enjoy bird watching as the area is known as the home for many species of waterbird. The best thing about walking around Koombana Bay is - you sometimes are lucky enough to see wild dolphins gracefully swimming in the bay.  It is definitely highly recommended when you visit Bunbury.

I kayak on the inlet all the time and it has a surprising variety of bird and marine life. Its also a favourite place for non powered boating and sailing. There are a number of cove type beaches at the city end and a kayak canoe hire is available most of the time. The mangroves are apparently the most southerly known in Western Australia. There is also some great walks around the inlet that lead to boardwalks and nature strips which are really relaxing. The Dolphin Centre and the harbour are also close. Plenty of restaurants and food outlets are close by so its pretty central for a day out. Overall its pretty good.

We ran 5km round the inlet in the early morning at 6am & it was absolutely perfect. So many birds in the mangroves & beautiful water reflections.

There's a 5km trail that goes entirely around the Leschenault Inlet, suitable for walking or biking. We walked it, and it took about 90 minutes, due to a few stops along the way.

It's very close to the city center, and there's several places right alongside where you can park, like at the rowing club. There's also a few small parks and toilets in this area. The trail going around is paved, and mostly flat, but there are a couple of bridges you do have to cross.

There are some points of interest along the way, such as the Mangrove Boardwalk. We were a bit disappointed with the Mangrove Boardwalk, because it's a bit run-down, and were glad we hadn't come just for that, but had done the entire walk.

The inlet itself is quite murky and the water is brown, so it's not super pretty as such. But it's always nice walking near water, and this is no exception. Not all parts are pleasant, however. There's a long stretch that goes right besides Koombana Drive, so you're walking right besides traffic. This area is also close to some industrial towers, and the smell from these and from the water itself in some spots is not pleasant. In another spot you have to walk through suburbia, so you're just walking on city streets.

Most of the trail is quite nice, though. It's ideal for a 15-20 minute bike ride, or even for a jog. And it's close to Koombana Beach, and the downtown area of Bunbury, so it's in easy reach of everything.

Note that the Leschenault Inlet shouldn't be confused with the much larger Leschenault Estuary. The Inlet has a 5km loop track around it, but the Estuary is further north and is a much larger body of water just north of the Inlet. In contrast to the Inlet, the Estuary is 13.5 km x 2.5 km in size, and is separated from the ocean by the large Leschenault Peninsula on its west. That takes a lot more driving to get to from Bunbury, whereas the Leschenault Inlet is only a short walk from the city center of Bunbury.

This is one of those drives you will always regret that you didn't walk it, so much to see and visually take in. Take some time of to enjoy life and do it here.

You can see the estuary from Bunbury or Australind, but if you want a more nature based experience, go to the Leschenault Conservation Park which is north of Australind, on Buffalo Rd. There's camp grounds and a couple of nice walks to do, but BEWARE of mosquitoes. There's signs everywhere warning of Ross river virus, so make sure you're prepared if you go to this part of the inlet.

Well used running and walking circuit before and after work, but there are lovely quiet times too. Good views of residential areas, city centre and water. Love seeing how close industry is to town. If you are lucky you might hear/see a dolphin surface.

Stayed at the caravan park in Australind and enjoyed the inlet on a small dingy. When the ocean got too rough for fishing, motored into the inlet with a few crab nets. Lovely relaxing afternoon and were rewarded with a nice feed of crabs

Seabirds and waterfowl everywhere on the inlet and roosting on rocks and islets which would indicate there is ample food in the inlet to sustain them all. Little sign of human polution along the banks of this inlet. However there was a huge amount of evidence from irresponsible dog owners. Doggy do was in abundance - very disappointing from a walking perspective.

Easy, interesting and very photogenic walk. Brilliant views at sunrise and also sunset. Dolphins cruising, rowers sculling, myriad bird life through the mangroves plus a choice of great coffee and or cocktails as I sit down & contemplate my photos.
