Your self-guided tour among an enormous collection of working tractors and machinery; homes, cottages, and displays will entertain all ages. Feel the heat in the blacksmith shop, listen to the sounds of the old Pianola or take a ride through our Mallee township on a horse and carriage. Cruise the river aboard the historic PS Pyap or Join us as the sun goes down with the award-wining Laser Light Spectacular ‘Heartbeat of the Murray’. The first of its kind in the world to use a natural river environment and setting as its background to produce a 360-degree multi-media spectacular unlike anything ever seen in Australia.

- Robert D4,701 contributionsA Must Do in Swan HillWe took advantage of all three options for seeing the Pioneer Settlement and had a wonderful time. This is really a must do when in Swan Hill. We arrived in Swan Hill in the late afternoon. After dinner, we went to see their nighttime laser show, "Legends of the Mallee". It uses images projected onto a water screen, lasers, and fire to tell the history of the area from the Aboriginal inhabitants and European settlers. The show was excellent. We returned to the Pioneer Settlement the following day to explore the buildings in daylight. The Pioneer Settlement in Swan Hill is an excellent living history museum. There are free rides in a vintage car and a horse drawn carriage. You can see many historic buildings, some of which have hosts in period costume who are happy to demonstrate the exhibits contained within. There is a beautiful Rose Garden and a display of old tractors. The blacksmith was busy at work. The third option was a cruise on the Paddle Steamer Pyap, built in 1896. This was a relaxing way to see the Murray River. By combining all three options, we were able to get a discounted ticket. Take the time to explore the Pioneer Settlement. You'll be glad you did.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 November 2023
- JoenFionaLongreach, Australia79 contributionsA great piece of historySwan Hill pioneer settlement is a wonderful testament to life from the 1850 So much memorabilia and excellent displays of bygone era. Added bonus is the horse and wagon ride and a lap in the old 1925 Dodge. Also attended the light show which is a MUST SEE , very cleverly done .Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 December 2023
- hscameronRedhill, United Kingdom147 contributionsFabulous 2 day passAbsolutely amazing time. In our opinion much better than Sovereign Hill in Ballarat!! Not too busy and very easy to get around. We bought the 2 day pass for 3 people which included the settlement, evening light show(ancestor) , and paddle steamer river cruise. Thoroughly enjoyed. Really friendly staff, beautiful scenery and just great fun. Would 100% recommendVisited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 December 2023
- philljanAdelaide, Australia528 contributionsEnjoy all that this place offeredWas a bit quiet on the Sunday we went, but didn’t mean we didn’t get a great experience. On Sunday the old time band was playing in Main Street. They were wonderful. A highlight! Walked around the whole settlement, rode in an old dodge car, took the horse buggy ride, ventured on the Paddlestaeamer for a relaxing 1 hour cruise, and even got to make butter, and see the blacksmith at work, etc. Did both sound and light shows on consecutive nights. Both were informative well done, and great use of technology, and worth going to. Missed the little train tho that years ago used to take you around the settlement at night for sound light show. Only negative I had was that the paragon cafe was serving non Australia food. Just thought it be more appropriate to have maybe a sausage sizzle at lunch times, with onions, along with pies and pasties, and ham salad rolls and maybe donuts, lamingtons, just everything Aussie style fare. Also this place is staffed by volunteers, so these people deserve thanks for running such a unique place for us to visit. Worth going.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- nicola y30 contributionsNight ShowWe visited the night show with no expectations as we were staying at the caravan park and our neighbors were heading down and we had nothing planned. Well we were blown away by the show. We saw the Mallee show and were truely in awe of the whole thing.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 August 2024

A great half day exploring a heritage settlement. Exceptionally clean; friendly staff and easy to navigate around. We took the paddle-steamer one hour ride - it was pleasant and the captain shares history of the area. An important history lesson for young children to see how early settlers lived. Staffed by many volunteers - they do a great job and are very happy to share information.

We started with Heartbeat of the Murray, with an 8pm show, even though it's advertised at 7.30pm. When it's busy, they put on an extra show. If you know you're going, book in. We rang in the morning, and the 7.30pm show was booked out, so were offered 8pm. We also booked our cruise, and paid for it all when we arrived in the afternoon. For Heartbeat, we were told to get there early, so got there around 7.10pm as there's a queue. The show was excellent, but only goes a little over 23 minutes or so. Rug up if going during the cooler months.
The next morning we used our 2 day pass to start off with the Pyap 1 hour cruise at 10.30am. Relaxing and with a little bit of live commentary, we enjoy our cruise on the Little Murray. Children will enjoy seeing the paddle turning and pushing the boat along.
Drinks, tea, coffee and snacks are available for purchase.
We then went to the excellent Spoons Riverside Cafe (see my review) which is next to the Gem boat.
After lunch we went back into the settlement for another few hours. Use your map, and tick off the attractions so you don't miss anything. The Gem was worth looking at. Make sure you go on the free horse drawn cart and heritage car. Both only go around the settlement, and they're included in the entry price so go for it. We also watched the butter churning display, and really liked the Kaiser Stereoscopic Theatre. We've never seen that before.
There's a lolly shop and gift shop, and we were impressed that even though the buildings are from an earlier era, nothing smelt old, dusty or unpleasant.
Deserves its high rating.

We attended both the Day & Night shows. Entry price for families is really expensive. We thought we were getting a great deal with the 2 day pass on offer & thought we would fill our weekend there. But sadly we were mistaken. The daytime visit only took 4 hours to completely see everything.
At just under $100.00 for a family ticket it is really pricey. On this day they had the horse & cart going & the vintage car. No blackSmith was operating, No wood turning, No steam engines. The paddle steamer was yet again an additional cost on top of the entry cost that we decided Not to pay.
NOW the Night laser light Spectacular... Nothing spectacular about it other than the Price to get in. No video recording was allowed & now i know why. The show only goes for 25 mins & that's It !!! There is no access to the grounds or buildings before or after the show. You are escorted there & back. At almost $100.00 for the Night show family ticket it is a rip off... If we were told for that price we only get a 25 min show, we would not have spent the extra for the tickets.
So in the end it was almost $200.00 for a family to attend & we were only there just over 4hrs for the total event. This doesn't include gates closing at 4pm & the night show not starting aging till 8pm.
At least we have ticked this off the bucket list, but with prices like this we wont be going back again.
A full video of this experience is on out YT site if anyone is interested before they spend their hard earned cash.

If you are in Swan Hill it is well worth a visit to the Lazar show at Pioneer Village. It was very informative as it told the story of the Murray River. It was suitable for all ages, also easy access for all abilities. We enjoyed the experience and loved the visit to the general store after the show to purchase some old favourite lollies from our youth

The pioneer village & light show is magnificent
I believe the designers of the light show also did the Singapore show & the quality & conciseness is evident. It gives the background to Swan Hill over the eons.
Walking around the village shows the effort taken to capture the past & it’s very educational

Pioneer Settlement was excellent. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Loved it.
The PS Pyap cruise was unexciting. Overbooked on the day, covid-19 1.5m rule signs everywhere buy staff did no follow.
I boarded with a person who has an intellectual disability. Tried buying a couple of ice creams but due to staff refusing to provide a receipt meant we could not buy them. When I asked that they just scribble the amount on a piece of paper and sign it they refused again!! no cash receipts! I would have thought its not such a difficult request but it was.

We were not disappointed with our visit to the Pioneer Settlement, plenty to see and get involved in!
WoodTurner, Blacksmith, dress up in the clothes of the day, take a ride in a vintage car or horse drawn cart!
There are stores to purchase items of the day, lollies and souvenirs! An amazing chemist/dentist shop!
Take a cruise on the PYAP riverboat, enjoy a wine on the back deck as you watch the birds and local farms go by!
The Heartbeat on the Murray evening show was fantastic, very well done, and there’s a story in there as well (adults and children will both enjoy). If you arrive at 7pm, there’s a short film at the entrance to watch. The General Store is open as well before and after the show!
The staff are so friendly and helpful! The must do in Swan Hill!

This is a well put together village showcasing the history of the area extremely well. There are some very interesting exhibits on display. We paid $30 per adult for a two day pass. We were unable to access a paddle steamer ticket as they were sold out. There are vintage car rides and horse drawn cart rides too. Personally I loved the pharmacy and found it fascinating. The cafe is the thing that lets the place down. Dirty dishes piled up in tables, no healthy options and like something from 30 years ago they need to modernise the menu and get some staff that can multi task. It’s a shame because the rest of the settlement is trying hard.

Very cool to experience this again as an adult, as I had been during a childhood trip. My bf hadn't been here at all, and he really loved this place and said it was way more than expected. It was very quiet which was sad to see, but I think this is because of the last couple of years of COVID, however we enjoyed the quiet as it meant we weren't struggling with crowds. All the people running the shops and exhibits were friendly and we would definitely recommend visiting.

This well laid out and very well maintained representation of an old colonial times village is absolutely worth the effort to visit. From the collection of steam tractors and farm implements to the buildings, the working blacksmith shop, the old steam locomotive and the paddle steamer Gem you get a real sense of live in early settlement days. The butter churning and rope making demonstrations were very enjoyable as was the carriage ride around the settlement. Don’t miss this experience when in Swan Hill, it is absolutely worth the effort.

How long is the light show? Is it in a theatre? Do you sit on seats? How many people does the theatre hold? Would anything upset someone sensitive to the dark?
Written 23 February 2018
The show starts in the cafe with a slide show then a walk in the dark with dull lights leading the way. There is the theatre with seats (wooden) it holds around 100-150 people. The walk could upset someone that doesn’t like the dark. You could bring your own torch.
Written 24 February 2018
No you are not allowed to take pets into the settlement.

Have a look on their website for the 3 in one deal. That's where I found it. Off the top of my head I can't remember. Plud their information will be up to date. I think it was about $50 or 60 for the 3 in one deal, but may be wrong!
We had to keep our light show ticket and pay for it outright the night we arrived, but by showing it they gave us the 3 in one deal at the entrance the next day.
There are also concession rates and family rates available.
