About
Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), located on Yorta Yorta Country, is one of Australia's outstanding regional art museums, showcasing our exhibitions and collections in new and exciting ways and creating a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging space for all audiences. Artists are central to our work. Our programming is designed to be locally relevant and engage with global contemporary ideas. SAM is recognised for its significant Australian ceramics collection, and our nationally significant collection of Indigenous art. As the only public art museum in Greater Shepparton and north central Victoria, our mission is to present great art in Shepparton, and to contribute to the cultural enrichment, community engagement and economic prosperity of the region.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My wife and I visited this place during our stopover in Shepparton to have a rest and lunch in Shepparton during our drive home from a holiday in RACV Resort in Cobram.
This is an impressive building. However, there is not much to see in the art collection. We left after a few minutes.

So much waste of space, the impressive staircase takes up a huge area of each floor and down the other end is toilets and a lift with not much on display in between.
Not a museum as one would think with galleries taken up with modern art, meeting rooms, work shops etc.
Big souvenir shop with over priced items and a huge cafeteria.
Only plus for the visit was free entry!

Elsewhere At Sam!!! You are an amazing team. From the very beginning you have been an absolute pleasure to deal with.
We had a corporate event in your space that people are still talking about. Only today a colleague brought up how fantastic the event was at our team meeting.
You outdid yourselves and managed to back it up the very next morning with another event that we held in the same space.
We very much look forward to hosting more events at SAM.
Alaina, you and your team are exceptional.

What an incredible place to visit! There is so much on offer at SAM... it has an information centre, an aboriginal art store, a cafe, a gift store and of course the museum. Carparking is available nearby... it's on the edge of Victoria Lake! AND there is moooving art here- would it be Shepparton if a cow wasn't involved?!?
It really is the hostess with the most-ess. This is an amazing building ... the architecture is interesting as well... Shepparton Art Museum is the first art museum in Australia to achieve a 6 Star Green Star rating, representing world leadership in sustainable design of a public building.
The staff here were extrordinary! One lady I chatted to is an artist herself... she is from overseas originally and she shared her story with me. She now lives locally and loves being here.
SAM is an incredible attribute to the Goulburn Region showcasing some amazing art displays. I look forward to returning.

Very modern building well positioned overlooking Victoria Park Lake.
The exhibition from the Murchison POW camp was good and informative. The collection of Namatjira family paintings was large but poorly presented with no description of the paintings or connection of the family to Arthur.
The gallery is no NGV or Art Gallery of NSW.

Possibly the worst gsllery in Victoria. Only 1 poorly curated room open in a four storey gallery! A small Streeton IS on show- but hung to high to be seen. The bulk of the collection is in storage. After reporting my disappointment to 3 separate staff they all acknowledged they hear the same complaints regularly - yet then confirmed that ‘exhibition’ is on show for 12 months. The hidden entrance and lack of paths from the carpark say it all. Don’t bother.

Hi we visited the new Shepparton art gallery looking forward to a fantastic experience in a very impressive building. While the building is huge and modern it lacks the one thing that makes a great art gallery anywhere and that,s an interactive family experience. The new art gallery is all about the building. The cafe looks very up market and expensive. Why not somewhere where families with little kids can get some cheaper snacks . We seen people eating meals with wine which is very nice but it didn,t look kid friendly. There were parts of the building that weren,t kid friendly at all with sticks poking out of art installations .
The biggest draw card and what we were looking forward to seeing most was Sam Jinks beautiful sculpture of his mother and baby ,it was no where to be found . We have seen this quite a few times over the years and were looking forward to seeing it in it,s new home. We were told it won,t be on show for 18 months it needs maintenance which is ridiculous . We like aboriginal art a lot but the new gallery seems to just contain aboriginal art and little else. What happened to all the other Australian art such as Roberts ,McCubbin and all the other notable artists.
We went up one floor after another the top floor is a cavernous room devoted to musically mornings where people can sip wine and listen to piano recitals. There is also an outside deck for watching the landscape on a sunny day. l actually wasn,t going to put a review in but l see a lot of other people were disappointed to .
Please don,t let this great building just be a great building at 50 million dollars to build it needs to be filled with awe inspiring art ,ceramics, paintings ,proper aboriginal art and dare l say it not art that looks like it was done by a child , Art needs to inspire the senses and we all need to walk away feeling that we had a great experience . You,ve got the building you just need to make in more inclusive . Good luck

Loved our visit to the museum and gallery. Fabulous artwork on display and friendly and knowledgeable staff. We had two young boys with us who also enjoyed the visit. The Art in Conflict exhibit is amazing and will definitely see where I can view them in future and revisit. Don’t miss a. Visit to the museum whilst in Shepparton
