The bridge crosses from the township to the Lakes Entrance Main Ocean Beach and provides good access to the beach and good views of the town and the Cunninghame Arm. The bridge was first built in 1937 and has had a number of refurbishmnents and additions since then.

When in Lakes a few days ago we walked the length of the Esplanade and across the new footbridge to the beach, a nice walk , not sure when the new bridge was built but I have fond memories of the old wooden bridge , as a teenager a group of my mates threw me off the bridge in jest, ah the things we did. Great spot to take a few photos, their were plenty of black swans about. Every time we go to Lakes there always seems to be something new done along the Esplanade.…

There is an information board at the site that will tell you, " The original Cunninghame Arm Footbridge was officially opened on 27 March 1937... It has been built to provide direct access to the ocean bridge that was becoming more popular as Lakes Entrance tourism grew." Until that point... boats had been used to ferry people across the area. The original cost of the bridge was 1250 pounds. This is a bridge I traversed many, many times during the time I resided in Lakes Entrance and I have returned over the years to cross it again and again. The area and the bridge itself has been updated a great deal since those days. After visiting the bridge yesterday I laughingly sent a photo to an old friend and said, " Oh my goodness, the original bridge that we crossed to go to beach parties has been replaced- does that make us old?". She assures me "it just makes us adventurous and foolish... with better infrastructure". Well that's reassuring. :) It's definitely something you should do when you are in town... these days the old wooden bridge has been replaced with this new bridge...it doesn't deter from the experience.…
