- AreWeThereYet6026 contributionsSurprise in a Regional townHad some time to spend passing through Bendigo and made the Gallery the destination to see. Totally surprised by the size of the gallery and the range of exhibits. They mostly have something in common with the area, either early purchases, local artist etc. Highly recommend to spend some wind down time in this beautiful place. The attached cafe is a great place to enjoy some quality food before or after your visit to the exhibition.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023
- OttoBerlinerMelbourne, Australia60 contributionsGo for the ArtThe Paris exhibition fascinates and educates with posters, paintings, photographs and film, all thoughtfully presented. Post-visit, we stopped off at the cafe where we were promptly and courteously directed to a table. Alas, when after 15 minutes no wait staff came to our table, we decided to seek refreshment off-site.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 March 2024
- Norm the NomadAustralia1,245 contributionsExcellent. Of a high standard.Today was a good opportunity to visit Bendigo (about 2 hours away). We wanted to go to mainly to attend the Bendigo Art Gallery, which has been hosting an international Art Exhibition (titled “Paris - Impressions of Life, 1880 - 1925). It was very good, and allowed us to play the ‘we’ve been there’ game as we viewed the various paintings / prints etc.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 May 2024
- Megsy13Melbourne, Australia289 contributionsAlways excellentThis is my second visit for a major exhibition- this time was Paris 1880-1925. The Bendigo Art Gallery does premier exhibitions very well. The staff were friendly and helpful, although the cafe and the gift shop are both somewhat overpriced. ($11 for a pain au chocolat? Obscene!)Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024
- Jennifer M2 contributionsBendigo Art Gallery Bonjour BendigoThis was a wonderful exhibition show casing life in Paris between 1880 and 1923. Paintings, clothing, furniture and black and white film segments from the day show the everyday life of Parisians and the changes wrought by technology. It was very well done. The galleries permanent collection is excellent. We had lunch at the Art gallery cafe afterwards which was also good.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 June 2024
- Vickie KSydney, Australia8 contributionsBeautiful Bonjour Bendigo ExperienceWow! What a wonderful exhibition! Paris during the Belle Epoch lived up to all our expectations. Not only where the paintings and items (lots of beautiful women's dresses) evocative of the times, but they were exquisitely displayed. Our time at the gallery was finished off with a delicious French themed lunch in the cafe. We were very glad we had booked as it was very busy on the day, but our table was ready, and the staff were friendly and efficient. Initially, we thought we had over ordered, but everything was perfect, and we finished it all off with a local bottle of sparkling wine, also good. Very happy to recommend both the gallery and the cafe.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024
- ToffeemanMelbourne, Australia25 contributionsBendigo is worth a lookWe had a fantastic few days in Bendigo and while there we travelled on the 302 tram, visited the art gallery, the Chinese garden, went down the gold mine and walked through the beautiful park a few times. We also visited the Stuppa just outside Bendigo which was very impressive. In terms of dining we had lunch at Beachworth Bakery, high tea at Maldon Rose (very nice) and dinner at a really nice Indian restaurant called food o’clock. We attempted to have dinner at The Shamrock Hotel but unfortunately our order got lost between placing it and the kitchen. We waited just over an hour before we checked what was happening.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 August 2024
- LandC46Auckland, New Zealand264 contributionsWorth the train trip from Melbourne.A pleasant (inexpensive) 2 hour train trip from Melbourne and an easy 15 min walk from the station found us at this spacious gallery. We particularly enjoyed the “Watercolour Dreaming” exhibition which was a revelation. There is a classy range of gifts in the small store but we were sorry there were no images from the exhibition which we could have bought to remind us.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 September 2024

Went and saw the Elvis Exhibition and just loved it. Spent just on 2 hours on the presentation, costumes and memorabilla about his life and for a concession of $25 definately worth a look at. It is fantastic that Bendigo could obtain this special collection of Elvis, a real credit to the Art Gallery and all involved in getting this here to country Victoria. Well done look forward to upcoming events.

The curation of the Elvis exhibition was first class and thoroughly worth a special trip to Bendigo however, I agree with prior reviews and say that there were too many people to enjoy it completely. This was in part due to the fact that alot of the exhibits were behind glass in cabinets at hip level so you really had to get close to see and read the details which was hard with so many people. We entered at 11am to be greeted with a long queue of people heading in and alot of people still inside from earlier time slots. But that cannot detract from the quality of the exhibition, BAG have done an amazing job.

Visited The Elvis exhibition, parking was difficult using The App suggested in the parking space out the back of the gallery, the app wouldn’t work and nobody answered the faults line.
I thought there was far too many people at our session, difficult to wander around and most people were not wearing masks. The congestion spoilt our experience.

Another great exhibition at the BAG.
The Elvis Experience is good even for those who aren't huge fans, like us.
10 rooms of info, photos, costumes, a car, a motorbike, clips of song performances..... even we took 90 minutes to look around.
Plenty of people there when we were there on a Friday morning, so if you're making a big day or weekend of it, book tickets before you leave.
We're looking forward to whatever the gallery has in the future.

A well planned Art Gallery. Visited the Paul Guest exhibition. Very well worth a visit. You wear special glasses and the pictures come to life and you hear the story through headphones.

We loved it here. There was a huge variety of art on display, from the new, challenging and weird, to beautiful Australian art from the nineteenth and 20th centuries. Something for everyone. We spent a couple of hours there, and wished we could have stayed longer. And it was all feee, too, including the special exhibitions.
The lady on the reception desk was very friendly and helpful, and provided us with a map. This helped us find the lovely cafe ... we had coffee and scones, delicious. It’s a bright, modern cafe with seats outside by Rosalind Park. The reception also has free postcards depicting their best works of art.
The shop had some classy and unusual things for sale ... no good to me though, as I would have to take everything back to London!

We spent a couple of hours browsing the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions. The 2020 Paul Guest prize entrants were interesting, particularly the red quilt.
All Covid rules were applied, which was reassuring.

Went to see the ELVIS memorabilia. It was well displayed, however we felt there were too many people let in at one time to view it all and we felt like sardines in a tin can, everyone was so close together, masked or unmasked.
It was quite chaotic, would have preferred less people let in at the one time.
Far too crowded!

So love Bendigo Art Gallery, everything from the ease of online booking, rear of the gallery parking ( can be busy but usually can get a car space within a few minutes, cost today was $3.00 for 2 hours) . The exhibitions are always so interesting and always lots of easy reading notes at each point of the exibition. Staggered entry means you are able to view the exibits well. Loved the Elvis Exibition yesterday, bopped along to the Elvis music playing and the 2 large screen showing Elvis preforming. Wow those jump suits, jewellery, Elvis's
Early life, so much more to see as well. Lastly love the fact that the Art Gallery brings such community benefits as job, economic benefits through increasing hotel and restaurant patronage.
Keep up the good work and looking forward to our next visit

We drove up from Melbourne to see the Elvis Graceland exhibition, opting to also stay a night in Bendigo. While the exhibition itself was very good with great pieces on display, there was way too many people inside, with at least 50% not wearing masks. What is the point of timed entry if it does not achieve a pleasant experience where everyone has a chance to get up close to each exhibit? I intended to stay the full hour but left after 20 minutes as it was unpleasant. Such a shame.

We are coming up from Melbourne by train, how do we get from the station to the exhibition please?
Written 22 May 2016
Hi there,
Thank you so much for your question.
Walking from Bendigo Train station to the Gallery takes approximately 15 minutes. Straight up Mitchell Street and View street past the Forever Marilyn sculpture in Rosalind park (take a picture of yourself with her). There are a few cafes and shops along the way that will make the walk a little slower.
Alternatively, you can catch a bus from the Bendigo train station. The number 50, 52, 53, 54 or 55 bus to Bendigo Art Gallery.
We do have more information and a map on our website under About Us and Getting here (I cant put a link unfortunately on this part of tripadviser).
We look forward to seeing you here and please let us know about your visit.
Kind regards,
Mark
