About
An interesting and dynamic regional gallery where there is always lots to see. Upstairs, the gallery collection is definitely worth a visit, as the Gallery holds one of the best regional collections in the country and is always looking for interesting, thought-provoking ways of displaying it. Downstairs there are temporary exhibitions, with at least four open at any one time.

- Gr_TaylorAdelaide, Australia178 contributionsSuperb regional GalleryWe went for the Ballarat International Foto Biennalle which, as usual, was very special. Much of the main program was displayed in the Art Gallery and the way it was curated was exemplary. Then went up to see the more permanent collection on the first floor. Very interesting. The staff were exceptionally helpful so highly recommend.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 17 September 2023
- David HouriganMelbourne, Australia38 contributionsDelivers a great deal more than I expected from a small regional gallery!Punches above its weight. It may be a regional gallery, but it is fantastic! The building itself is lovely, the art collections are great, but the curation is really the standout. Clever themes for exhibitions give a real variety to what you experience, and the captions to works give a real sense f why they are displayed and what sort of collection the gallery has built up over 140 odd years. A real highlight of my trip to Ballarat.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 9 January 2024
- Maryann BBasel, Switzerland325 contributionsA must visit when in BallaratWe were not expecting such a wonderful art gallery outside of the big Australian cities. We were lucky enough to time our visit with the free guided tour which was very enjoyable and informative. We learnt a lot about both the art works and the history of the local area. The staff were all extremely helpful. One can easily spend 2+ hours here if exploring all the exhibits. And it's all for free!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024

Have always enjoyed this wonderful gallery, & current exhibitions are fascinating - don’t miss the quirky COVID Superheroes sculptures, or the VCE students’ top efforts after the strangest, most challenging year in 2020. The permanent collection is extensive & always enjoyable, changing periodically as treasures are brought out of the vaults & rotated onto available walls. The building itself is quite grand inside, despite its underwhelming street facade. Well worth 2-3 hours of your time, & there were even kids’ art activities set up in one area for some welcome distraction for tired little legs!

My husband and I visited last week. It was not our first visit. Loved most of the exhibits, and I don't mind artistic licence, however, disrespectful racist art and swearing draws the line. It is an insult to Euro Australians to have Captain Cook in two artworks called "Captain F****er" and Captain C**t". Would it be OK for me to call great Aboriginal people "Truganini C**t" or "King Billy F****er"? I dont think so and would never consider it. The art gallery should not be a home to reverse racism. Greatly disappointed on this visit. Wise up. Black, White, red, yellow, brown or black we are all Australians and should have our ancestors respected. but it seems not if you are white...................

Gallery is free entry. In a stunning building. Met with amazing stair case to second level. Great eclectic space. Interesting and quirky lay out with old mixed with new. I particularly liked this. Easy to walk around all the public art spaces, has wheelchair access so thats helpful. Easy 1.5 hrs in the space, great gift shop and a cafe`, cant review as didnt attend it. Easy to find in Ballarat, , very central, some fee parking down Lydiard St, South of Gallery. Well recommend.

Hi Lyn - we're so glad you enjoyed your visit and thanks so much for the very positive review. We're so glad you enjoyed the mix of old and new, because that is a new aspect of our display which we have been working very hard at and we are very happy with the results so far. Please come again.

The Ballarat Art Gallery is a brilliant place to spend a couple of hours during a cold winter's day. There are currently seven varied and interesting exhibitions as well as the main gallery offerings. The lay-out of the gallery is perfect, there is plenty of information on every piece of art and the gallery staff are extremely helpful. There is also an excellent shop where you can pick up tasteful gifts or souvenirs. And it's free! What more could you ask for in a tourist attraction?

We attended the Linda McCartney Photographic exhibition which was connected with the Gallery and also spent time at the Gallery and the surrounding area even enjoying the laneways. I must say we were very happy with all the staff we had contact with and the building itself was beautiful. And the exhibition was well worth the trip.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat is not impressive from the outside, but inside it is amazing. The first level is mainly visiting exhibitions and contemporary art, and the second level is a selection from the gallery's permanent collection. It has art by many prominent artists, dating from the 19th century and including Australian modernists. The Art Gallery of Ballarat has one of the best collections in Australia.

This is a great regional art gallery! We really enjoyed chatting to the staff who were very helpful and knowledgable about the gallery and the history of the Art Gallery in Ballarat. It displayed a number of paintings from overseas and importantly some from the Australian colonial collection. Well worth a visit!

This is the second time I have visited this Art Gallery and still found this I had missed the first time. You should start in the Original Gallery which exhibits paintings purchased at the time of the museum’s opening. Then’Place Gallery, ‘Country Gallery and finally the ‘Disruption Gallery.
There is Norman Lindsay’s Sitting Room and some of the families works on display downstairs.
The current exhibition’Beating About the Bush’ is a mix of old and modern take on ‘Impressionist Art’.
Sadly the cafe closed during the pandemic and never reopened. The gift shop is well stocked with lots of goodies.

Visited the Linda McCartney Retrospective exhibition which was suburb with many unseen photo chosen by her family. The art gallery is the oldest and largest regional art gallery in Australia. Established in 1884 it provides a great backdrop for the art.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest, most prominent and most diverse art gallery in regional Australia. The gallery dates from 1884, when gold was king. This gallery has a diverse collection. Collecting began in the Victorian era, and it is also strong in the Federation period. More recently, it has began collecting Contemporary art. The gallery has frequent visiting exhibitions. By the way, do not be put off by the exterior, the interior is spaciious.

Apologies for the late reply.
The bulk of the Art Gallery is free except when there is a specific exhibition.
When we were the The Archibald Competition was in town so we paid for this exhibition, at a much cheaper rate than the The Art Gallery of NSW.
It is a great regional art gallery.
Cheers
Hugh
