Mount Schank is an extinct volcano, pretty much the same in size as an active one I visited years ago in Tanna, Vanuatu.
The track to the top is very well constructed with concrete “logs” acting as steps. It works very well.
The view at the top was magnificent, out to sea as well as over farmland.
We walked the rim which took only half an hour. A great experience and well worth the climb.

If you want to get a view of inside a dormant volcano, Mt Schank is perfect. Relatively easy walk up for a barely fit 63 year old, fantastic views. Go in the morning to avoid hot sun.

What a view, this is a dormant volcano and it looks spectacular!
The walk from the carpark to the top consists of 1,038 limestone steps and is shaped like a strange ladder, very peculiar to walk on. This is quite a strenuous climb and although not a long walk it is quite hard and requires a moderate amount of fitness.
Once at the top you can walk a trail that circles the entire rim with stunning views 🤩
There is also another trail heading down into the Centre but this was closed when we were there for maintenance.

walk up to the rim has several step parts. The crater view at the top is good, and there is the option to walk the crater rim. Some parts of that walking path are not maintained and overgrown, so beware of snakes. The view doesn't really change as you walk the rim, the crater is the crater, and the farmlands views to the ocean horizon are pretty. These viewlines can be seen from the walk up the many, many steep steps, or once you are at the top looking into the crater. there is no real need, other than exercise, to walk the rim.

What can I say… what am underrated experience!
We were recommended this place by a staff member at Naracoorte Information Centre and it turned out to be a highlight of our short trip. With phenomenal views, and the opportunity to hike around the crater of a freaking volcano, what’s not to love.
We only came across a handful of people. It seems that not many know about the geological wonder.
It would be great to ser more extensive and detailed references to First Nations’ connections with this place, including names of landmarks, animals, flora and the significance of the area. Mt.Schank was not ‘discovered’ by Europeans. Research revealed that the process of naming and sharing is underway, thankfully.

Mount Schank is 15 kms south of Mount Gambier since 1995 I have come here 4 times finding the hike up and around the Crater Rim a fabulous short and interesting walk, It surprises me when I meet other travellers that many didn’t know about Mt Schank the Volcano should be on the sights to see while travelling through the area.
I was disappointed this time to find that the track down inside the Crater isn’t maintained and over grown which I wouldn’t try without wearing long pants and boots because of Snakes. Also there was a viewing area over a volcanic vent down on one side that is now obscured with small trees. Regardless I enjoy this place a lot.
In summer after here go and have a swim at the Little Blue Lake sinkhole short drive away back towards Mt Gambier.

This is a great walk up the side of the most recent volcano to erupt in Australia. It’s still not classified as extinct even today. You can walk up the side, make a circumference of the rim and traverse the crater floor if you’re really keen. Well worth a visit. The views from the top are fantastic in all directions from Mt Gambier to Port McDonnell. Take the trails that suit your abilities. The trail to the top has embedded concrete ‘sleepers’ to make the climb easier. Bear in mind it will be very windy at the crater rim. It is also a bit steep in sections around the rim and gravelly so if you normally use hiking poles, definitely take them!

This is a fantastic walk and will require a moderate amount of fitness. We climbed to the top and walked all the way around the rim. We then proceeded down into the crater. This path has not been maintained in years and it can be difficult in parts, but it was a really nice walk.

While not really high Mount Schank is a nice hike and walk for all those who like a trek, Some nice views from up top. Stop at Badenochs Deli for an ice cream on the way back!

On our way back from Port McDonnell, we decided to check on Mt Schank. I was disappointed that right after we reached the location and on the lookout, we didn't see anything at all...Crater to me doesn't look like a crater at all...It's just flat.

How long would it take to see and appreciate this attraction?
Written 16 July 2015
Hi katie. You'd probably want an hour to walk up, enjoy the view and walk back down; however if you want to walk up and into the volcano, Double your time. Also take lots of water and a snack. The walk itself is not too bad and you can take your time depending on your fitness levels.
