About
Drive down into the Valley Lake area and enjoy the Conservation Park, with koalas and kangaroos. Children will love the Adventure Playground. Bring a picnic and discover Brownes Lake. This was the site of Mount Gambier's original botanic gardens and the area is picturesque all year round, but especially in Autumn. You'll find covered shelters and 16 free gas barbecues within well-kept picnic areas. The expanse of grassed areas caters for many family activities & water sports on the lake. You can also give disc golf a go at the Crater Lakes Disc Golf Course. The Conservation Park presents indigenous species of flora and fauna in an environment very similar to that which would have originally been found in the area. The area is serviced by a network of walking tracks, all of which lead to lookouts, providing excellent viewing and photographic opportunities as well as the chance to enjoy the local flora and fauna. Walks include: Blue Lake Circuit - 3.6 kilometres, time one hour, grade

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited the animal enclosure nearby (free entry) at dusk and were the only people there. The kangaroos and wallabies were coming out for an evening feed and it was quite magical watching them in the twilight. Lots of lovely walking tracks to explore or just picnic on the banks of the lake.

This lake is very pretty to see but the walk around Valley Lake is one of the best walks in Mount Gambier. It is not a difficult walk but there are some uphill and downhill sections. The park of the walk up to the Tower is excellent. We love Valley Lake

Brilliant area to relax, do some activities or just drive/ walk around. In the morning it is misty and very quiet.
The reflection of the trees on the lake look like something from an American movie when the trees are yellow.
Definitely go by and check it out, lots to explore here

Only a small number of footpaths are currently open because of recent bushfires. However, the walk around ‘leg of mutton’ lake is open and can be accessed by a number of carparks around the route. All access to the crater rim is currently closed.

So disappointed with this visit. Without any obvious notice the Council closed access for cars and said we could walk down, which we did (long way down, longer back up). The jobsworth security agent at the top of the drive was no help. Down at the lake the noise from a private event (racing cars) had scared off the wildlife, which was the main reason for visiting Mount Gambier.

Pretty lake in Mt Gambier. We went to the Blue Lake first so this one didn’t compare however it had a completely different vibe. Beautiful green surroundings too. Plenty of spots to park. Looks lovely from high above as you drive down to the lake.

Never seen the Valley Lake before, as the Blue Lake is the biggest attraction. Big hard to find, but travel via caravan park road. Seen jet ski and ski boat on lake. Great wildlife park right next door seeing Kangaroos and Wallabies.

This lake is good for activities i.e. skiing, jetski, playgrounds and a trail up to centenary tower. Easy access by car down to the waterside.
Very well maintained and free access
HOWEVER, if you are a sightseeing tourist, blue lake is much prettier

If you have kids take them to the playground. Some lovely walks and hiking trails here too. Great for picnics and nice BBQ facilities too. You will see people waterskiing and jetskiing in summer on the lake.

Swimming in the Valley Lake is not recommended, but you can enjoy other water-based activities such as water skiing and kayaking.
You cannot swim in the Blue Lake as it is Mount Gambier's water supply.
The Little Blue Lake is a different lake, located 16km from Mount Gambier. This is a popular swimming spot in the summer months.

Hi...we are travelling to the area with an elderly person (not in a wheelchair) but looking at the toilet facilities, they appear quite steep to access from the ramp and doubt they would be able to get up there...are there others at the park more accessible?. Thank you

Hi, Yes there are easily accessible toilets at the far end of the valley lakes area. (Simpson's Landing area it is known as)
cheers
