- Danielle25 contributionsBeautifulThis sinkhole garden is beautiful and not to be missed. We returned later in the evening to have a picnic in the surrounding grounds and feed the possums in the sinkhole. The possums come out from about 7.30pm. Take a variety of fruits as some possums are fussy in which fruits they prefer. Fantastic experience for the kids.Visited January 2023Travelled with familyWritten 12 January 2023
- Sharon2307Geelong, Australia64 contributionsWeekend awayWhat an amazing place. Went at night to feed the possums and was not disappointed. So many running around and happily eating from our hands. Such a beautiful place. Would highly recommend visiting at night for this amazing experience.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2023
- MareeBarronAdelaide, Australia86 contributionsThe sinkholeMy partner and I went to the sinkhole in the afternoon. Enjoying the gardens and the natural formation of the sinkhole. Well worth the visit to see the well maintained gardens at the bottom of the stairs. Lovely hydrangeas, hybiscias and large palms. Also is know for the possums which the time of day we missed as it wasn't dusk. Plenty of parking and souvenirs sold from the souvenir shop.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 March 2023
- DaelWollongong, Australia4 contributionsA magical experienceIt feels like you are part of a fairytale and fairies and sprites will appear from behind the curtains of ivy that drape the walls and from under the beautiful plants that terrace the sink hole. I appreciate My Gambier keeping this a free visit. The gift shop in the reserve does great coffee. I think it is a wonderful must visit.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 March 2023
- Nate R3 contributionsCalming and beautifulGreat and relaxing place. Animals were rather relaxed and didn't mind humans being close by. It is brilliant looking up from the bottom and walking under the ivy vines. I would like to go back there.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 July 2023
- JohnAdelaide, Australia4 contributionsAbsolutely beautiful!Just how I remember it as a child. A little bit busy, but that is to be expected. Lots of steps and climbing, so wear comfy shoes. Going to the bottom and looking up produces a feeling somewhat to how it feels like in a childhood cartoon novel. Beautiful.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 August 2023

This is an exceptionally unique tourist attraction. It has a very interesting history but today it is a beautiful garden. It does involve quite a degree of stairs to access the floor of the garden but well worth the effort.

Absolutely stunning
It’s a must see. I went when my favourite Lily was in flower. There’s something special when you are around nature . We were just in awe on how beautiful it was.

An amazing experience that you can't miss when you go to Mt Gambier.
It feels you are in a movie when you walk the sinkhole, please note kids need to walk as it would be very hard using a pram.
Great place for photos, there is a little possum and they like to eat the local red flower.
Parking is very easy and free, there is also plenty of space outside for picnic and for the kids to play

This garden has limited access as it can only be entered via a fairly steep wooden staircase. It felt crazy to be descending into a sinkhole 20m deep and 50m wide. The gardens are well cared for by volunteers. A display at the entrance outlines the history of the sinkhole. There are seats as well as some BBQs in the garden! There is a balcony type area where one can walk behind a curtain of foliage. Highly recommended.

This is a wonder, a fascinating use of the landscape, and what nature has formed, humans have adapted.

Hey, is it worth a roundabout way ? We’re heading to the Great Ocean Road and wanted to visit the sinkhole, but it’s 2 hours away and don’t know whether we should do it or not

It is a long diversion from the GOR just for the sink hole. There is much more than it in Mt Gambier. Consider overnighting in Mt Gambier for other attractions too.

Are dogs allowed?

I have seen people sitting in the viewing platform area with dogs - at the bottom of the slope area just before the steps - though never down with the possums. I've not looked for signs but always assumed no dogs where the possums are.

Hello, is this at the same place as the nightly sound and light show?

Mount Gambier, Australia71 contributions
No, what i think you are talking about is a display on the outside of the building overlooking what the locals call The Cave Gardens. It shows nightly, but is not really a sound and light show, more of a movie clip.

Could you e mail me things to do at Mount Gambier for families with kids. We are planning to visit for a few days with friends and would love to be prepared by the time we get there. Thanks.

Crikey....Tantanoola Caves..Dingly Dell...Carpenters Rocks...Port MacDonnell.....there's also a volcanic crater you can walk into and around it..Mt Scott I think, but when we did it..hubby went down into the crater and climbed out the other side and I walked around the rim and saw an abundance of wild goats...birds and lizards. The Blue lake....the tower. The cave gardens in town...Umpherston sinkhole..and the list goes on. If you search in Trip Advisor in and around Mt Gambier it will bring up bucketloads to do...otherwise just get a map showing all around Mt G and google the town or attraction names. That's what we did and we had 3 weeks of things to do! It's my favourite place of all time!!

About 30 m would be fine, not good for anyone who cant do stairs, but it is well worth the look.
