Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a good regional art gallery but its key asset is the free regular film which it shows about the volcanic history of the area (especially pertinent given the number of sinkholes locally). The film lasts for about 45 minutes. The staff were very helpful about directions to other attractions in the locality. The shop had some interesting and quirky items for sale.
Its central location makes it easy to visit.

Riddoch Gallery is spacious, accessible and well laid out.
We weren’t in time to see the film about the area unfortunately, as from what other reviewers have written it would’ve been well worth it.
Even though some of the current exhibitions weren’t all to our taste, there was still enough we found of interest, especially the incredible woodwork.
There was a good range of items available in the gift shop, only one of two places we found in Mt Gambier selling local artists’ work, (the other being The Little Blue Wren Gifts & Art).
Thank you to the staff, who were friendly, very informative and helpful.

Highly recommend stopping to see the cultural and art centre. It’s next door to ‘The Cave ‘ sinkhole which is also worth looking at. The centre is an art gallery for local artist as well as other displays. The film about the Volcanic geographical area was Brilliant!! Highly recommend for upper primary age groups and up! So informative about how ‘Blue Lake’ developed and other volcanic activities. It started with the local indigenous explanation and beliefs which was very well done.

Unfortunately for me, the gallery itself was a bit of a disappointment. The exhibition space is great, but the exhibition on at the time I was there only featured a handful of artists, the work of at least 3 of which I didn’t really warm to at all. It didn’t help that there was no information about the artists other than their name and when / where they were born. There was no picture or summary of their life or important works or influences or much descriptive information about the paintings themselves other than a name and the materials used. Background would have helped to understand / relate to the artists who were all unknown to me. There was a video of one artist speaking but in the main she was facing away from camera towards the art and what she was saying was completely unintelligible, even at close quarters. Some subtitles would have been very helpful.
On the other hand, the shop attached to the gallery was a real gem. Some absolutely fabulous original art for sale and a real variety of items and price ranges from cards and textiles to mobiles, jewellery, pottery, watercolours etc. If you’re not even interested in art but are looking for a local souvenir or gift for someone, this is a great stop and highly recommended.

I'd give this gallery 5 stars for the staff and gift shop and, because of the exhibition I saw, 3 stars for the art. I was excited at the idea of seeing the work of 3 women artists from the south east but I didn't connect with any of the work. However, I would certainly come back and visit again.

Very disappointed that none of the permanent collection was on display. There were no exhibitions at all. We declined the invitation to the gift shop and returned later to watch the film about the first nation interpretation of the local landforms and the “Volcano” film. I commend the Mt Gambier council for commissioning both films. Sadly the diction of the narrators was unintelligible to anyone with less than perfect hearing. I recommend the addition of subtitles to both films.

Whenever there is a new display at the Riddoch Art Gallery it is well worth visiting. We have been very fortunate in the great variety of displays we have had there, especially recently. The displays are easy to walk around and view, being well placed, and where necessary the descriptions are easy to read and understand, and relevant.

We saw the Volcano documentary here. It runs a few times per day and is well worth the hour. We learned much and understood the history behind the local attractions so could further appreciate what we saw. At no cost this is a must in my book!

The architecture is fantastic, lovely blend of the old building with the new. Exhibitions a bit hit and miss for us. Went to see the Jane Austen inspired clothing collection, last days, really enjoyed it. The "patient" collection however was not my cup of tea.

Well located in the CBD and adjacent to the cave gardens so you can do both exhibits together. Very friendly and helpful staff. We enjoyed the exhibits and there is nothing wrong with boosting the local economy by purchasing some haighs chocolates that are for sale there. Worth a look
