Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s a 7km drive on dirt road, not a great road with some large potholes. I have a 2-wheel drive vehicle and did hit bottom twice. You need to take it slowly. The signage disappears at the last T intersection you need to turn right to go to the mine site/lake. It’s worth the trip to see this bright blue water in the bottom of the mine site

This old mine is definitely worth a visit. The colour of the water is a must see. It is not far off the highway and many folk camp nearby overnight. The location is between Cloncurry and Mount Isa, Queensland.

We camped at the old town site and it was interesting trying to work out where things used to be. Driving out to the mine itself you almost need a 4wd as it is very rough in places. I can see in many more years you won't be able to get in anymore.

This was a really interesting historical site. There are no old buildings left in the township - just slabs where they used to be. The sports oval was the most interesting. It would be great if there was more signage at each building site as we didn't get much of a feel for the place until we later saw a video on it. A self-guide would be great. The mine site is quite spectacular but is much easier to get to in a 4WD. It can also be tricky to find. From memory at the top of the hill, you turn right.

It's a bit of a drive to Mary Kathleen and easier with a 4WD but quite a sight. The colours of the disused mine and history of the now-removed township was great. Be careful with getting in and out, as some roads are marked private - and they are. It's probably a 45 minute drive but you can stay there if you take it easy with your van.

What an interesting place to visit. About 65kms east of Mt Isa on the Barkly Hwy it is easily accessible with an ordinary car except if there's been rain. A short drive around the town takes you to the mine where you can see where all of the mine buildings used to be. Then about 100 metre easy walk to the mine site. At the bottom is an intense aqua coloured water that was so inviting. Unfortunately no swimming as the water is still deemed to be radioactive.
Back to drive through the town. Hubby was hoping for a Devonshire tea where I was just hoping something was still standing! Unfortunately not but the town square has a big sign that explains everything.
The history of the mine is there for anyone to read and its really very interesting.
Well worth a visit.

We stayed a night at the abandoned mine/ ghost town. Concrete slabs everywhere for you to pull up beside and set up for a night or a few. Free camp and no facilities so best to be self sufficient. Plenty of space so you’re not camped on top of each other. Best sunsets ever.

Loved the ghost town and the 4wd to the mine. The drive to the abandoned town square is easy, spooky to see the old floor tiles and square fountain just left. The drive to the mine itself is 7km of tough roads with massive pot holes and cows darting around. The mine colour from the rocks to the water are amazing.

Drove in as far as we could in a 4wd. Holes in road 150mm deep. We had to drive thru a creek bed as the bridge is washed away. The grass on the walk to the mine pit is about a metre long. Was not walking thru that as I don't like snakes. A waste of a trip

We tried to get to get to the blue lake with our Outlander but were thwarted by some of the road conditions. If we had more time we could have hiked to the lake.
We did see the old town which had the slabs of previous dwellings.

It’s about 55kms from Mt Isa and there is a brown roadside sign telling you where to turn. The town is only a short distance from the highway.
