Into the depth of the earth we go, to get the feel of how hard mining can be, on man, women and machine.
What a fantastic experience, something complete different, not only learning a little more about the minerals that come out of the ground in Mount Isa, but also experiencing, what it’s like to be underground. They have gone to great lengths to give you as close as they can, the experience of a real mine. After changing into our very fashionable mining gear, including a hard hat that lights up your life, we head for the elevator, better known as a cage. 10 by 10 we descended, leaving day light and our name tags behind. Once we got to the depths, our carriage awaited to transport into the world of mining, crib rooms, side driven vehicles, air drills and kids doing what they do best having a blast.

    Amazing
Ian was an amazing host. Can’t believe this mine was constructed by local volunteers for us mere tourists to visit and explore the way things were. Totally amazing and loved Ians compassionate approach to our tour.

Underground Tour is a must !
The underground mine tour is a must do if you have 3 hours spare in Mt Isa. It is informative, hands on & absolute value for money. The mine was purpose built and is run by volunteers, ex miners with years of experience. Our guide Ian was fantastic & an underground afternoon tea and a complimentary photo at the end are complete bonuses.

A very rewarding and educational tour.
A very interesting and educational tour well worth the money. guide an experienced underground miner was very ably explained and demonstrated the workings of a mining and its equipment. Although not the real Mount Isa mine this demonstration mine was the "real thing" experience. Crib in the underground crib room was a real bonus as was the free photo of each person kitted out in miners protective gear.

    Great tour, informative and fun
An excellent 3 hour tour, learned loads from Ian our guide. We loved the ‘ dress up’ in orange paper jump suits, gum boots and hard hats. This mine was built so that tourists could learn about the mining history in Mt Isa after the working mines had to stop their tours. Going down in the cage was fun, then a great little train ride, then a walk round tunnels with the process of blasting and the way the miners used to work and work now fully discussed and explained. Had a snack of tea and pasties in the Crib Room then a drive back in a truck. Fabulous museum about the mining history in Mount Isa once we got to the surface. Such a good tour. Thoroughly recommend.

    Wonderful mine experience
What a great experience, our guide Bill had a great sense of humour and very knowledgeable explaining everything only an person who has experience life as a miner. Everyone of the workers where friendly and helpful, we enjoyed the three hour tour very much, to see all the workings of a real mine without having to go to a actual mine. We would encourage everyone to go and experience the great time of learning about mining underground

must-visit for families seeking an educational and fun experience.
Our family had the pleasure of visiting the Hard Times Mine Tour in Mt Isa, and it absolutely deserves a glowing five-star review! Our tour guide, Frank, was an incredible host. He not only had an impressive wealth of personal knowledge but also kept us entertained with his great sense of humour. Frank went out of his way to ensure that our kids were engaged and had a fantastic time throughout the tour. We found the tour to be well worth the money, and the delightful surprise of Cornish pastries in the crib room, along with a warm cup of tea, was a real treat that added to the overall charm of the experience. One of the highlights of our visit was getting to meet two young miners on their shift, providing us with a glimpse into the daily operations of the Mt Isa mine. Frank's insights into the history of mining in Mt Isa were truly valuable, giving us a deeper appreciation of the region's mining heritage and what early on miners endured. The tour comprehensively covered the entire mining process, from resource extraction to the examination of the finished product in the visitor centre. For our family, this tour was an enjoyable adventure, offering us valuable insights into how the main Mt Isa mine functions and its historical context.

    Innovative tour!!!
We had a great tour with Bill yesterday and of course Al!!! We really enjoyed the innovative way the tour was led. Loved all the interactive stuff. Very interesting, and Bill made it very easy for us to understand the enormity of the task when building the mine! Enjoyed the coffee and pasties very much in the ‘crib room’ Thankyou Bill for making the tour enjoyable loved dressing up too just added another dimension. Joanne and Paul from Manchester.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour at The Hard Times Mine tour. It was excellent value and gave you a good understanding of what the working conditions underground are like. The guide was a retired miner and full of information. You even get smoko at the end of the tour.

Ex miner Ian was an excellent guide on this underground tour. The mine is a great replica of the real thing with many mining techniques and equipment on display. Highlight was the underground lunch in the miner's crib room.

Did the tour with Steve today. The whole underground mine experience is unbelievable but being presented by someone with decades of hands on experience, hilarious and heartwarming stories is what really makes it. Plus Steve takes a great photo😉.

I was lucky enough to do this tour as the public holiday (ANZAC Day) coincided with my week for work duties in Mt Isa and I was not required to work on the holiday. It was fantastic in so far having some insight as to the life of a miner. Thoroughly absorbing and highly recommended, but more than that brought to life by the shared experience of our tour guide, Steve, who was a brilliant guide with a lovely sense of humility and one of those blokes that you want to have in your side because of their sense of community. This could be a pretty bland experience without the input of a guide such as Steve. He elevated it to top notch in understanding exactly what it feels to be a miner. Well done and a must do.
