About
For nearly thirty years Pepper Tree has been a beacon for quality wine in the heart of Hunter wine country. Founded in 1991 it continues to flourish as one of the stalwart wine companies of the region. The Pepper Tree Cellar Door provides a picturesque and quintessential Hunter Valley wine experience Pepper Tree started with a focus on grapes from the Hunter Valley but today the roots run deep for owner John Davis with vineyard sites in four premium wine growing regions across Australia. Almost three decades on, Pepper Tree is making consistently great wines, drawing on these vineyards situated in the Hunter and Orange in NSW to prized patches of soil in Coonawarra and Wrattonbully in South Australia. You could say it’s the best of four worlds. Our Commitment to the four regions in which John Davis has invested so much of his time and expertise in are the driving force behind all we do. The Hunter Valley represents us but the roots of the tree spread through all four regions.

Popped into the Pepper Tree cellar door on arrival at our Convent accommodation. Liam who invited us in for wine testing was knowledgeable, friendly, and unobtrusive. Plenty of variety to taste and it was a delightful introduction to wine tasting at the hunter.

I’m so glad we went back to PepperTree on our trip with friends from overseas. Mick was our amazing host today and we loved his stories, advice and relaxed style. I would not hesitate to recommend to others. The grounds are also picturesque!

We had a great time at Pepper Tree in Hunter Valley. After doing some research, I chose them, and they exceeded my expectations. The wines were exceptional, and the staff was fantastic. I especially loved their Shiraz and exclusive Verdelho (we even purchased a few bottles).

We had booked a private tasting for my father in-laws 70th on Saturday and Pepper Tree was to be a highlight for us. Unfortunately, our schedule had us running late and we unsuccessfully tried multiple times to call ahead as a courtesy.
When we arrived, we approached the outdoor reception area and was immediately yelled at from across the courtyard repeatedly not to go inside, when we had no intention of going inside. Once I explained we were late and apologized we were spoken down to and in an attempt to help be accommodating and get the most out of our remaining 20minutes there at the venue, I had asked perhaps we split the tasting, those that like white taste white and those that like red taste red, that did not appear to appease our server "Justin" either. We were seated and promptly poured a wine with little explanation, upon approaching our group for the second time with a wine to taste "Justin" then proceeded to explain that groups of people over 60 "are the worst" because they think they know everything about wine and are always drunk and annoying. Absolutely disgusting and tone deaf given we were celebrating a 70th and half the group was over 60. Very disappointing as it was meant to be a highlight, but we walked away very disappointed and upset. A very picturesque place but terrible terrible staff. Justin should be ashamed of himself and perhaps seek a different job if he can’t speak to customers properly.

We had an amazing experience for our wine tasting. Shaz was excellent talking us through all the wines, different grapes and also giving some other recommendations for the rest of our trip. I left with sheets of recommendations and of course a bag full of wine and goodies. I’d highly recommend this place for its welcome and friendliness, probably the best tasting that we did in the few days we were at Hunter Valley.

Our family we were visiting with were keen to return to Pepper Tree after having a memorable experience a few years ago. This lovely cellar door did not disappoint a second time round. Our hosts Rick and James were incredibly good humoured, personable and knowledgeable. They patiently appeased our wildly differing palate preferences, hitting the mark with several ‘off list’ numbers!
Highly recommend for wine lovers who want an unpretentious yet high quality tasting experience. Thank you Pepper Tree for creating great family memories for us in the Hunter Valley.

Pepper Tree was the first stop of our wine tour and by far the best. We were hosted by Dave who was exceptional at entertaining and informing us about the Pepper Tree Wines.
The grounds are stunning and picturesque, and the staff were very accommodating. The wine was of course exceptional, and we even managed to get a Kath and Kim quote from Dave.

It was a 12/10 experience, and we would highly recommend!

We booked a pre-paid tasting as required in a post-Covid opening during the holidays. Firstly it appeared that we were silly to do so, as we were treated no differently from people walking in unannounced. The young guy behind the bar was very disengaged and uninterested. His attitude was quite surly, and first thinking it was us, it appeared he was little interested in anyone else. The dribble of wine you were given made it impossible to make any assessment of it’s worth, so we left without buying.
The last time here a different front of service led to an enjoyable time and the purchase of many wines. This guy costs them business.

Must visit, put this at the top of your list for Hunter Valley.

My wife and I are wine experts and have had tastings all over Europe and the US. This ranks up there with the best of them.

Fabulous wine tour for beginners or experts. This will be a future stop on our Hunter Valley trips.

Lovely setting, nice people, great wine. Don't miss it.

We booked the Vault tasting which is perfect for a large group or for people who want to learn a lot in a smaller environment. But, the casual tastings out on the lawn and in the bar looked fantastic as well. Good for a small group or an intimate afternoon.

We met Dave (great guy) who handed us off to Dean. Dean has worked in the winery with the winemakers and is himself an expert on Austalian and global wines. We had the nicest time talking about 12 wines. He walked us thorugh them and we made comparisons glass by glass. He really knows the wines and we had a fun discussion - and learned a lot about the valley.

This was good for an expert, but would be a great experience for a person who is new to wine or new to the Hunter Valley (as we were).

We ended up buying a case of wine, but there was no pressure to do so. Such a relaxed and informative session. We will be back on our next trip and I highly, highly reccoment Pepper Tree.

Pepper Tree is a beautiful property, also with lovely country gardens to walk around, with a chicken coop as well. My husband, myself and another couple did a wine tasting there, however, while the wines were good, our host seemed grumpy and very uninterested in talking to us. He gave very little information about each wine and was half walking away as he finished his last sentence. Very disappointing. The other couple who were sitting on the other side of the bar had a better host, who seem enthused about doing his job. If you are on a tight budget, this winery offers $5 per person wine tasting at bar.
