On Thursday 9th July we had a half day tour with Twi Fat Blokes Gourmet Tours for 4 pax. We chose Two Fat Blokes based on the description on their web site, reviews on Trip Advisor & a recommendation from our accommodation.
Our experience fell way short of being, “Informative & professional, with a knowledgeable & entertaining tour guide.”
We write this feedback with an awareness of the current situation regarding COVID-19.
However, we believe the lack of communication and quality control of their product should be evaluated and addressed when people are paying a premium price based on the experience promised.
The most disappointing aspect of our day was back at the Two Fat Blokes Gourmet Kitchen where it was advertised, we would try the most popular cheese and wine matching experience in the Hunter Valley. We arrived just before dark due to being picked up late and as a result we were seated outside in the dark without any proper heating or light. We requested a candle for light which was provided but the gas fire could not be lit as they had run out of gas, nor were we offered indoor seating as was advertised. The indoor area appeared to be packed up and the staff member commented that she needed to get home to her children.
We understood that not all cheese options were available but what was served had been set up much earlier and was less than appetizing along with the soggy crackers.
A very underwhelming experience all round but also because the guide was obviously unprepared to present the cheese and wine effectively due to lack of training, nor how to remedy the situation to accommodate us at the venue. This was not the ‘learn and laugh’ with an entertaining guide as advertised.
We would like to note that at Hungerford Hill Estate our tasting began with being served by the accounts lady who had been thrown into the job and openly admitted that she knew very little about the wines. It was only after questions were asked that we were given an experienced cellar door staff member to guide the rest of our tasting.
Our experience at Glandore Estate Wines with Aimee was great! This venue lived up to expectations of a professional and welcoming wine tasting experience.
Unfortunately, our guide being new to the job was little more than a driver. Whilst she was very friendly, it was apparent that little to no specific training was given to prepare her for her role as an ‘informative, knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide’ and a representative of the company.
We spent three days exploring the Hunter and were impressed by how other establishments have adapted in these difficult times without compromising professionalism and guest experience.
