- StephanieMoree, Australia21 contributionsCharm, class and ChardonnayWhat a wonderful spot! From the moment you drive up the hill to Thomas Allen Wines you know you are in for exceptional service and it did not disappoint. The venue itself has an old world charm, sophistication and class about it and sitting outside looking over the rolling hills and vineyards with a slight breeze coming through is something that will linger in my memory. We came for a wine tasting on the 27th of March and although our server was on his own and spreading his time between four different groups, he did so with ease and made us feel important and valuable. He was very knowledgeable, like able and just the perfect amount of cheeky…. A winning combination in his profession in my opinion. The wines were on another level and I don’t think there was any that we didn’t immediately love. I have never personally found a Chardonnay that I like in all of the 21 years that I’ve been of legal drinking age however by some miracle, it was here at Thomas Allen that I found the only Chardonnay I’ve ever liked. The 2021 Understudy Chardonnay completely exceeded my expectations so much so that I bought some on my way out. If there are any wines that you didn’t purchase from the venue you can also order online. I’ve been on many wine tours in the Hunter but this was my first visit to Thomas Allen and I will be raving and recommending it to all of my friends and it will always feature in my stops on my next trip to the Hunter Valley.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 29 March 2024
- GrandTour2720124 contributionsThomas Allen experienceThis is an exceptional winery. This tops our list, and cant be compared to anything.Mitsura would have to be the best dessert wine we have tasted, sparkling Chardonnay is also impressive. The rest of the wine on the list is also superb. The place is exclusive and can be seen with the waiting list to be a member. I came here twice this month, once with my husband and the other with my friends. The staff are knowledgeable and pays attention to detail. Thank you Garry for being so kind, patient and knowledgeable towards us. Thank you 🩷Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 May 2024
- aliciamax22Tamworth, Australia2 contributionsPerfect in every way.Hands down the best wine tasting experience in the hunter valley. Booking required, but the knowledge of the staff is unparalleled. Grant was the gentleman that took care of us and really won us over. The wines that we sampled, were some of the best we have ever had. We took a dozen bottles home with us and signed up to their wine club membership. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 October 2024

Always enjoy a tasting session here.
Not only are the wines exceptional, but the ambience of the tasting room, the log fire (at appropriate times of the year) and the person providing the tasting experience are all part of an exceptional introduction to some of the best wines produced in the Hunter Valley.
Bookings for the tasting sessions are required.
This is an exceptional winery, producing first class Hunter Chardonnay and Shiraz,
Can highly recommend a visit to Thomas Allen Wines.

Arrived to a pleasant atmosphere with a room of table seating OR Classic Bar style.
Everyone was friendly and comfortable with the wine tasting.
A real classic experience the wines are priced well AND better still if you join the wine club.
An absolute must.
We will definitely recommend this winery.

We stopped by on chance and had a great experience. John hosted us and he was brilliant. He gave us a truly authentic Aussie wine event. No tourist BS or sugarcoated experience. We learned about the challenges of producing wine and the difficulties caused by the horrendous fires.
We tried the range of wines produced and they were all simply superb. The sparkling “Boss Semi Dolce Rossi” was and is a colossus among wines and named after our host.
Our only regret is that they only sell in Australia and not the U.K. 🙁
There’s lost of places to visit in HV and many large establishments which draw in the crowds because they’re well known. But, if you want an authentic experience visit Thomas Allen and support a smaller producer. You’ll not be disappointed and you may leave a bit wiser too.

After visiting many cellar doors in the last few days, this was our favourite (all were good, the Hunter standard is high). Gary our host was an experienced veteran of the industry and had some great insights into the nuanced art of winemaking. But as good as the cellar door experience is the wines speak for themselves. The low intervention wine making style really shines through in the freshness of the grape. Well done and we look forward to the Wine Club offerings!

Having now been to 10+ cellar doors and vineyards over the past few weeks across Napier, waiheke and Hunter Valley, this was by far the best service and experience we had. Gary was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about wines and provided more information about the wines we tasted than I have received at most other wineries we’ve visited so far.
On top of this, the setting and views were stunning, there were kangaroos relaxing under the trees in the car park and the seating was comfortable.
The only negative I can possibly think of is that there wasn’t an option to combine the tasting with a cheese board etc.
By far the best cellar door in Hunter Valley we’ve been to. Well done!

This was, without a doubt, the best experience of our 3 day trip to the Hunter. Gary was an excellent and enthusiastic host to our group of 8. The wines were delicious and beautifully explained, all for free and no pressure to buy. All the staff made us feel so welcome and added to the beauty of the location. Just don’t forget to book!! Weekends are usually for members only but check anyway.

Favourite part of the experience - that’s the question that comes up when you write a review here and I have to say it was the host! Ben took us through the wines, the story and the winemakers philosophy. What a treat! The wines were each different and full of flavour and a joy to enjoy. Joined the wait list for the wine club and is a definite stop on further trips to the HV.
Enjoy!

Another amazing cellar door winery in the Hunter.
No standing around the bar here , you'll be sitting at a table inside or outside with a beautiful view of the estate .
Not a large range , but that's what makes them all soooo good.
We enjoy them so much we had to join club 1733.
Thanks Mitch for another enjoyable time wine tasting.

We found the older gentleman was dismissive and condescending. Wine was ok but with bad service doesn’t make for good wine tasting
