We just viewed the Every Breath exhibition which was small but fantastic. This is the old prison so just the building itself is wonderful to explore. The exhibition was set up through the old cells, exercise yard, women's cells. This exhibition was free and the staff were so friendly and helpful.

A truly fascinating part of Newcastle's history, the lock up has a number of immaculately kept former prison rooms. The exhibitions held there are also worth going for alone.

The Lock-Up has revolving exhibits and are interesting as they relate to the culture, history, or a current topic. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys are and the venue itself is engaging as it served a lockup.

Cool transformation into a modern art gallery. I've never been in a prison, so that was sombering. Some of the exhibits are a bit far-out and political, but for free is an interesting stop for sight-seeing. Next door, sharing a door is an unusual artsy textile fabric shop.

The Lock-up is an interesting venue of different art with artists in residence who show their work and make it more accessible to people like me who don’t really get some of the art out there these days. I kept having trouble with the title “The Most Gaoled Race on Earth” thinking it said Googled instead of Gaoled, yeah I’m... More

...and a job well done. Free entry, and really helpful staff. They have ever-changing exhibits, and even if you're not much into modern art, just have a look at the cells and obtain a sense of the history.

The Lock-up Cultural Centre is located in Newcastle's original Police Station and Lock-up. We discovered the Lock-up on a recent visit to Newcastle and were intrigued with the displays in the contemporary art gallery housed in the old Lock-up which featured "The Most Gaoled Race on Earth" exhibition. We found the staff and guides to be approachable and very knowledgeable... More
