History of BHP Steelworks is on display
Newcastle Museum is a fascinating collection of artifacts collected to commemorate the history of Newcastle, in particular the BHP Steel works. The BHP Steelworks dominated the city of Newcastle, until it was shut down. The huge ladle carried molten steel; it dominates the Museum. The history of the BHP Steelworks is shown in documentaries. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company is now the world's mining company, but its history as a steelworks is on display. The Museum is conveniently located near the harbor, near the center of Newcastle.

Amazing experience learning about the steel making in Newcastle. Wonderful sea monsters exhibition with great models and displays. Lots of displays about the history of Newcastle.
No cafe on site but plenty of options near by.
Entry is free to the museum however the Sea Monsters Exhibit does have a modest fee.

Great museum to spend an hour or so in. It is free of charge to enter and see the main exhibits which tell the story of Newcastle and the surrounding area. There are also special exhibitions which cost extra. Located in the Honeysuckle area of Newcastle, it is next door to the Visitors Centre and located in the old train workshops.

Next to the excellent visitor centre this relatively small local museum is worth a few minutes of your time. Interesting section on local industry but the area that appealed most to us was the children's science area. Lots of clever stuff, particularly the ability of children (perhapswith a bit of help!) to lift a car off the ground through leverage. Obviously, a museum particularly worth a visit if you have children with you.

On a recent visit to Newcastle, we visited the Museum of Newcastle and found it a very informative insight into the history of the city and its community. The museum is designed for education and suitable for children covering many facets of life there from the Steelworks period, sporting achievements, war-time experiences and local identities of note whom came from there. An amusing exhibit is a collection of various containers (tins and packets) for food and medicines from various decades - a step back in time. The Museum is close to the promenade around the Port of Newcastle and easy walking distance.

The demonstration of the steel works was very graphic. The history exhibits were fasinating especially the war memorabillia. A little sad to see all the local industries that have gone e.g Arnotts and the Oak factory. There is also a great hands on area for little and big kids.

Nice museum, and free!

Some rather typical expositions covering history of Newcastle (and Australian lifestyle in general). The highlight is steelworks exhibit with some beautifully set displays, which are especially fun for kids. Also there's a little hourly show/demonstration about how it all worked...

Overall, nothing special, mildly fun and well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Visiting from out of town, attempt to go to the museum. Firstly there is no signage outside so when you drive past you cannot see where it is and drive past. Finally your GPS guides you there, and you attempt to park. There are no car-parks anywhere. So you drive around and around and around. Still no parks in any of the paid parking spaces nearby, or any of the streets. So you give up - never having set foot in the actual museum.

A very good and informative place to visit. From coal mining to innovative science - all found under one room. The science room is the best part of the museum. Highly recommended for young adults and kids.

Worth the visit. I loved the BHP display especially. Won't spoil it but very authentic and very interesting. Guide was very helpful and pleasant. Miss Porter display kept the wife busy! So it's a must visit.

Entry to the museum is free, which is very good considering what they have to offer. They have a range of exhibitions that cater for all ages. Some of them are interactive and bring out your inner child.
