Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed must see. This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. This set of 19th and 20th century gaol buildings create a pocket in time, and the experiences within brings history to life. This regional gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. We house important collections such as the hangman's kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird's-eye view from the watchtower. With guided tours, night tours, and theatrical experiences on offer, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a rare piece of history open to explore.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Old Dubbo Gaol! It is in a very central location as it is in the middle of town, well preserved, staff are very helpful and has lots of souvenir items for sale. The gaol is relatively small compared to Boggo Road in Qld or the one in Fremantle but it is well organised and... More

I love history so this was a must-see for me So strange that the town grew around the gaol and now it sits right in the middle of the main street Plenty of info about the place - wall plaques and recorded stories bring the place to life Scary to think that executions were still happening up until 1955

We stayed in Dubbo to break our drive, as well as to go to the Zoo. We had some time spare in the afternoon so hit the main street of Dubbo. By chance we came across the Old Dubbo Gaol and enjoyed it immensely. The history is great, but the association behind the Gaol has done a fantastic job restoring... More

I visited the gaol for a twilight tour with my two sons (10 and 11). The tour was interactive with my kids thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to role play. The tour guides/actors were fabulous and highly entertaining! A great tour in the heart of Dubbo easily accessible and well worth the fee.

Well worth a couple of hours exploring just how difficult life must have been for prisoners. Only needs an hour or two.

A look into the past with a tour of the old Dubbo Goal. The site is very well preserved and provides a good commentary of the past. Worth the visit.

A great experience for the whole family. We arrived and were lucky enough to be just on time for a quick performance of an escapee and guard. They pulled children from the crowd to participate- including our kids. Only need an hour to see the entire jail, worth the trip.

Overall this was a great visit and something I really recommmed if coming to visit Dubbo. The presentation of the grounds were immaculate. The stories you hear about the inmates and the ins and outs of daily life was pretty cool. Im not sure if tours are offered but this would be a great addition. The real life actors were... More
