About
Old Dubbo Gaol is a state heritage listed must see. This remarkably complete and intact gaol operated for 119 years from 1847 to 1966 and is still nestled in the main street of Dubbo. This set of 19th and 20th century gaol buildings create a pocket in time, and the experiences within brings history to life. This regional gaol is representative of powerful, surprising and dark moments in Australian prison history. We house important collections such as the hangman's kit and gallows, and unforgettable experiences such as the dark cells and the bird's-eye view from the watchtower. With guided tours, night tours, and theatrical experiences on offer, the Old Dubbo Gaol is a rare piece of history open to explore.

- Explorer5163919 contributionsMake sure you do a Twilight Tour! Way better than expected. The staff are amazing! We booked in for a Twilight Tour. We thought it would just be a bit of fun and a time killer. We were blown away! The staff/preformers were AMAZING. The gaol is interesting on it's own but the preformers made the experience so much fun and informative. The teenager loved it and was also blown away by how much better it was than she expected. Definitely worth doing!Thank you so much Explorer516391! We're so glad you and the family enjoyed our Twilight Tour! Your kind words have been passed on to our brilliant staff - thank you. - Cate B8 contributionsA MustAn amazing place to visit. So much information to read and learn. The displays were wonderful and interesting. Had a fantastic time learning about our Criminal past. Can easily spend a couple of hours here as there is so much on display. My only suggestion is that the young male staff member on the front desk needs a bit more experience. He struggled with our tickets that we had booked online.Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review! We are always happy to hear that visitors had a fantastic time Our appologies for our staff member at the front desk. It was only his 3rd shift and he should have had an accompanying staff member. We will investigate and pursue some additional training We hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in the Dubbo Region and look forward to seeing you again Kind regards, The Old Dubbo Gaol TeamWritten 11 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 October 2023
- elly45 contributionsOld Dubbo GaolThank goodness it’s a place to visit and not to stay . See what would have happened to you if you were naughty back in 1847 to 1966 , trust me looking at the photos you would not of made it out , not alive anyway . A real eye opener . A good place to vistThank you for taking the time to leave us a review, elly2019! We are incredibly lucky to be able to look back on those times with the modern lense, and learn from the rich history within the Gaol walls. - Mike W2 contributionsFantastic visit and staff / team. The afternoon we spent at the Old Dubbo Gaol was terrific. Between the content of the exhibits, the knowledge of the staff, and the energy and professionalism of the performers, it was an outstanding visit! We (father and daughter) left educated, enthused, and entertained. Highly recommended.Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review! - themac71Gladstone, Australia60 contributionsA great account of part of Dubbo’s historySpend a couple of hours here and you’ll get a great sense of the history of the Old Dubbo Gaol. Plenty of stories about the occupants and the life they spent, and lost, during their incarceration here. The exhibits are interesting and the site is really well kept.Thank you for taking the time to leave us a 5-star review! - Alisha LBendigo, Australia88 contributionsA great piece of historyI couldn’t believe what was hidden behind the big old walls of this Gaol. As we walked in I was actually surprised at the little old buildings that housed the cells. I loved all the information and easy to read signs. Very informative on prisoners and what they went through. I loved walking up to the watch tower and along where the guards walked. There is a drop down staircase that is covered inside the guards tower but has a sensor and starts talking as you walk in which was a little startling. My 11 year old loved it and was really interested, my 8 year old was a little scared as it was dark in places and some cells had mannequins in them which scared him. Great piece of history, as we were leaving they were starting an escape talk about prisoners that escaped/ or tried to escape which would have been good to listen to but we had to keep on going. Thanks for leaving the review Alisha! It can be very surprising how well hidden the Gaol remains behind its walls, completely concealing almost the entire site until you make you way inside. Very understandable that you youngest wasn't comfortable with the dark corners (and mannequins!) around the site, they are spooky and can definitely catch you unaware. We hope you get the chance to come back and catch one of our shows or tours, they truly are a highlight to the experience we have here. During the day, there were little shows which were very engaging for families. It’s easy to get around and right in the centre of town. The twilight tour was great fun. Very family oriented but interesting for adults too. Very funny and the staff/actors were awesome at their job!Hi Kate, Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. - BevsterMoe, Australia66 contributionsA visit to the old Dubbo GaolLovely day in Dubbo so we took our time wandering around the old gaol. Taking in all the sad and fascinating stories of the history of our ancestors (one would hope not!!) the laws were pretty tough back then. We had a bit of fun with the props and enjoyed the interaction as you enter some of the areas. Informative and well kept, couldn’t stand in the cold and dark solitary confinement cells though, if only those walls could talk. We loved it.Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review. It's amazing to hear our visitors enjoying their time inside the Old Dubbo Gaol. We couldn't agree more. The history within the walls is confronting and eerie - though something that as important part of our history. We hope to see you visit again soon, perhaps a night tour could be a different experience to look forward to. I cannot believe how fortunate Dubbo has been in gathering its historical information and photographs, even of individuals who were once incarcerated. If ever in Dubbo it is worth a visit.Thank you so much for the review! We are blessed to have passionate people conducting research and writing our displays. It is wonderful to know that visitors appreciate the work that has gone in and just how fortunate we are to have the records, images and artifacts that we hold here. - Summer PugBowral, Australia68 contributionsGo to gaol, go directly to gaol - this one’s too good to missThis is how you engage younger people with history. Excellent research, storytelling and presenting information at different levels so people can read more if a story gets their attention… love your work. We came nine years ago when my kids were small and thought it was great then - it has improved so much. So grateful to the team for the brilliant and hard work you have put in to this amazing resource. Oh! And extra points for Tilly and the guard who engaged our youngest and gave the bigger kids a good laugh. Thank youOh wow! Thank you so much for this incredible review. We absolutely love being able to present the sites thorough history in many different ways, and it's just brilliant to hear that you enjoyed your visit. Our characters in costume are always an amazing theatrical way of bringing history to life - your kind words have been passed on to our cheeky characters. We hope to see you visit again in the future. Perhaps one of our theatrical night tours could be an experience to look forward to! We paid to go in at full price there were no tours being offered even at limited numbers and no actors as per my first visit many years ago. Charged full price given a map and told to go check it out with two teenagers. Would recommend a discount given to families as there are no tours running and no actors playing out scenes as normal was a bit of a rip off really.

Hi Kristy, we are very sorry to here you didn't enjoy your time here as much as you would have liked. We can understand the frustration of the situation as we also want to be delivering these activities for guests to our site but must consider the well being of guests and staff before all else. Our performances and tours are a complimentary activity we offer when we are able and are not reflected in our admission prices.
We hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Dubbo and hope next time you visit we are able to conduct those tours and performances for you.
Kind Regards,

Claims to be “COVID safe”. Nope! Signs up everywhere reminding people to stay 1.5 metres apart but when on the twilight tour starting at 9.30pm, constantly told to gather closer. In the men’s section you get taken into an isolation room, they crammed about 17/18 people into that tiny room. And then the tour continued, and again we were told to stay “closer”, it was a safety issue to keep a safe distance from each other. So we crammed together. The tour guide was also not very knowledgeable about the Gaol either. When she was asked a question, her response was usually “I’m not sure, I’ll have to check on that”. It was not a good night at all, definitely NOT COVID safe despite the signage. Would not recommend.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We have reached out to you previously if you would like to get in contact with us regarding your experience we can be emailed at odg@dubbo.nsw.gov.au
Our staff are taking the COVID situation very seriously and doing there absolute best to adhere to restrictions as best as possible but with the confines of the gaol space is very limited. We understand the frustration with the situation and apologise if our staff created an environment that made you feel unsafe.
As for the Beyond the Grave tour itself, it is common place for our staff to answer questions honestly. This means that in those few situations that our staff are unable to answer questions the best practice is honesty and I am sure you would rather this than a made up answer. Once again if our staff member didn’t follow this up with finding your answer you can feel free to email us with any questions you had and we will do our best to answer them but of course there are still some things we just don’t know.
Recently our script for the Beyond the Grave tour was revised with new additions added. Our staff member has acknowledged they took notes with them on the evening to ensure they gave accurate information to all those in attendance. Tour guides are given extensive training on the history of the gaol and we are all passionate about the experience we deliver, with new information that is uncovered being incorporated immediately into any and all experiences that are applicable. Unfortunately our knowledge isn't always perfect and we are sorry that not all your questions were able to be answered on the night.
I appreciate the honesty in your review and hope to hear from you so we can improve the situation for future guests attending our tours.
Kind Regards,
The Old Dubbo Gaol Team

Having done a similar tour many years ago in WA, we were all looking forward to the tour. Unfortunately, our new tour guide mainly read of the paper, which, if given the text, one could have done on its own. While I understand experience comes through execution, perhaps a paired experience with a more seasoned guide would have made a world of difference for the audiences. At $40 a ticket, I honestly can’t recommend the additional mark up for a night tour over a day experience. The guide is a make or break for such experiences. And this was a break.

Our family of four (2 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 12) stopped in after a day at the zoo. We spent roughly 1.5 hours on a self guided tour. There were 2 dramatic performances that we watched while we were there. The workers did an amazing job involving the crowd, particularly children, to provide interest and entertainment.

Second time visiting after almost 10 years and agin not disappointed! Took 6 kids and 3 adults, locals get in for free and us visitors $22, look up for exhibition times cause their skits are so good and entertaining for the children. A fun interesting way for kids of all ages to learn history and to think this goal only stopped being used in the 60’s is crazy! Walking those paths and going into the rec yard imagining years back real criminals were once walking around there!

It's so amazing to have visitors return after a long time and still love their visit to the Old Dubbo Gaol!
The history within the walls definitely is interesting and putting yourself in the shoes of the prisoners is a great way to peek through the looking glass!
We hope to see you and your family visit again soon, maybe our night tours are the next experience you're looking for!

Just a wonderfully informative experience, looking at how difficult life was in jail in the pioneering times.
There are many stories in this institution, take time to sit and watch the video on the hangman - which explains an insight into how a hanging works.
Brilliant exhibition, well worth visiting when you are in the area.

We are really proud of the hangman's story video we present here. It does a fantastic job of explaining the life of our hangman and the process of executions, something many often misinterpret. We hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the Dubbo area.

When I visited previously visited, only the self guided tour was available. This time there were two day time performances included in the admission price which added to the experience, especially as there was audience participation. I also did the night time tour, which provided a different perspective. If you book the night tour the cost includes day time admission as well. The Day time performances and the night tour are suitable for all ages.

Spent a couple hours here with my 11 and 16 year old. Right in the middle of town - beware of parking ranger.
We all loved the shows but the performance by Tilly was exceptional. My partner and youngest loved the iso room and his out to scare me as is pitch black. The history is sad but worth knowing. Would have loved to do the ghost tour but was adults only will return another time without the young one

The venue is great by day and sometimes there are spooky night tours. In the school holidays there are re-enactments with local actors so the experience comes alive. The venue can also be hired for evening events.

We went to the Gaol during the October School holidays. When we first arrived, the staff told us all about what we could see and do there. There were 2 shows on during our visit and they were entertaining, while still informing about what happened at the gaol all those years ago. It's easy to get to, right in the middle of main street. Make sure you visit the Gaol. It's worth the visit.

The 'Beyond the Grave' Tour runs during school holidays (usually Monday, Wed & Friday) so we won't have any operating during February. However, if you have a group of 10 people or more we can arrange a special group 'Beyond the Grave' tour for your particular date.

Hi, How long does it take to visit Dubbo Gaol as I'm trying to plan our trip? e.g 2hrs. Thanks

Hi Angela
We usually recommend an hour to go through the site. This is the average time it takes, some people take 45 minutes and others can take up to two hours, it really depends on the person visiting.
Once you have paid for admission you are able to come and go from the Gaol as many times as you like until we close the gates at 4pm.
I hope this helps with planning your trip, please don't hesitate to contact the Gaol if you have any more questions.
We look forward to seeing you
