Located just off Dean Street in the heart of Albury, St Matthew’s Anglican Church is open to the public once more. Very picturesque inside and a peaceful place for a period of reflection.

Born in Palestine sometime in the 1st century, Saint Matthew was one of Jesus's 12 apostles and also one of the four Evangelists, according to the Bible. Matthew authored the first Gospel of the Bible's New Testament. This church is named in his memory.
The Albury Anglican Parish was established in February 1850 and by 1851 the first rector Henry Elliott had arrived.
In 1856 a plan by Sydney architect Edmund Blacket was accepted and work began in 1857. The first portion was opened on March 13 1859. The building combines Edmund Blacket's original west wall and tower base of 1857 - 59, William Boles chanel completed in 1876 and the rebuilt church designed by Ian O'Connor after the church was gutted by fire is September 1991.
The outer walls of the new church were built of granite. All windows, porch and door arches were built of cut stone. The stone for the tracery of the magnificent east window came from the quarries at Table Top, and the granite from Black Range. The white freestone in the transept windows came from Omaru, New Zealand.
I was heading out to dinner when I walked past this church... it's very stately behind the walls... and it captures your interest. Against the night sky it's imposing and eye-catching.

We all cried when fire ravaged this building. The community gave much to resurrect this loved church. Some treasures were lost then others gleaned. Superb creation - bell tower too.

St Matthew's Anglican Church is a delightful church, just off the main street of Albury, which is a very busy city. We found it a lovely quiet spot set in a delightful garden.

Great entertainment especially the chants. The building was great. Only drawback, we had to wait over an hour for the food.

Fr Peter McLeod Miller is an inspiring priest who preaches equality acceptance and goodness as true expressions of the faith. Stunning Meditation Concert on Good Friday Afternoon and spectacular Easter Day - there was at least 500 people there as well as sheep, alpacas and chickens... lots of happy children and families and an entertaining sermon, wonderful music. a tribute to God's glory in the Easter spirit

I have had the plesure of playing the fine organ in this church on both our visits to Albury. However, there is more to the church than the organ! It has a long and interesting history (detailed in some of the literature available in the foyer) and the architecture of the building is well worth inspection.
