Book advance. And bring your own because only water and gas facility is available in the hut. Not a difficult track but you need to walk 3 days with backpack.

Up there with the best of the 'Great Walks'. We have done all of the Great Walks in the South Island in friend / family groups over the last few years and this is one of the best. We took a reasonably leisurely approach, starting...More

I walked along Routeburn track for Key Summit and the view is spectacular. The walk is easy with tree shelter and the panoramic view is breathtaking

We just did the first part of the track which was the 3 hour return trip up to the Key Summit. This was a beautiful easy walk, although quite steep in some places, and was well worth the view from the top! Breathtakingly wonderful and...More

Could easily be hiked through in 2 days. Could also be done as a long day trip out and back (would recommend going from the Divide through just beyond Harris Saddle or to Routeburn falls, then return). We used Trackhopper to relocate our car and...More

We just did a short three hour hike on part of the track and it was absolutely stunning! We had the perfect weather which definitely helps and I found the walk fairly easy (my parents struggled a little bit on the uphill section) It is...More

Being from Colorado, my husband and I are avid hikers and we were really excited to do this three-day hike. The weather forecasts for our hike were full of rain, wind, and cold temps, but luckily we ended up with gorgeous weather for the majority...More

We hiked the Routeburn from The Divide to Routeburn Shelter. We hired EasyHike to relocate our car for the trip. Bobbi at EasyHike couldn't have been more helpful in planning our trip. The hike took us 11.5 hours including lots of breaks for photos, food,...More

Another great Ultimate Hikes trek. Somewhat more difficult than previous treks this trek did not disappoint. From the initial briefing, coach transfers to and from, the lodges, the food and beverages and lastly the wonderful guides led by the amazing Sadao who is an absolute...More

We are considering walking the whole Routeburn with our children (aged 6 and 8). DOC says the track is not suitable for under 10 year olds - does anyone have experience with younger (reasonably fit) children on this track?

Hi Emily, I just posted a review of our Routeburn trip with our kids 10 and 11. We didnt find the track too strenuous but I would worry about young kids walking on the edge of cliffs with life changing drops. I worried about... More
My husband and I (both early 30s) will be hiking the Routeburn Track in mid-February. We are staying in the Routeburn Falls hut the first night, and the second night can choose between the Lake Mackenzie campsite or the Lake Howden hut. We like the idea of staying in huts, as our packs will be lighter without camping gear, however the Lake Howden would make for a much longer second day. Any advice on which option might make for a more pleasant trip? We don't have a lot of backpacking experience but are reasonably fit. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

We recently did the Routeburn, and on the second day tramped from the Falls hut to the Howden hut. It took us about 7 hours and was reasonably tough, we even asked the warden at the Mackenzie hut if we could use our tickets... More
Hi! I'm planning to do the great walk with a group in Feb/March and need some advice! Has anyone completed the walk in 2D1N and could recommend which route to start with/hut to stay in? I.e Would it be advisable to start at the Routeburn shelter and stay one night at the Routeburn Falls (it looks like amazing view!) and then end at the divide the next day? If also anyone who knows or can advise on any side walks worth going either way.

Hello! The Routeburn is definitely doable in two days. And I would agree with the person above that you can do the track in one day, but I would definitely not recommend it. Yes, you would still see most of the views, but... More
