- mdh969Canberra, Australia1,039 contributionsCruise along Milford SoundFour of us went on a cruise on Milford Sound. It was very picturesque and the guide was knowledgeable and funny. We decided to take the bus from Te Anau as part of the tour. This was better than driving because we got running commentary and the bus knew where to stop to get great photos along the way. It also meant I could take in the views without driving. The bus also gave us a bag with our lunch to take on the cruise. Lunch was not available on our cruise. It did have tea, coffee and biscuits. If you are in the area, you need to see Milford Sound.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 31 October 2023
- Marion FGreensborough, Australia46 contributionsOvernight on Milford soundWent on the mv mariner where you stay on board overnight and you get to see and experience the sound without all the crowds. The bus trip which was included in the price was a full size touring bus which was a pleasant surprise. Our driver (Craig) was fantastic and stopped at many lookouts etc and was very informative. Cabin was compact and as suggested an overnight bag is best. Food was quite good and staff were friendly. A great experience.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- ShrijuSydney, Australia43 contributions360 degree views !Wonderful scenic 360 degree views. Thanks to a fabulous weather - we could see Penguin, seal and dolphins. The drive from Queenstown was also fabulous however the stop of Mirror lakes was a big disappointment - No reflection in the Lakes !Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- Rabih S16 contributionsLovely experience! This trip takes about 12 hours. We were picked up at 6:55am and were dropped off at 7pm. Long day but worth the experience. Milford sound seems to be the favourite and popular amongst the visitors but I prefer Doubtful Sound. Both are equally majestic. However, Doubtful Sound total drive (return trip) is about 5 ½ hours where Milford Sound is about 9 ½ hours (round trip). From memory, the first drive was about 2 hour 45 minutes. It starts from Frankton Road bus depot and it stops in Te Anau town. You get a 30-minute break and it is another 2 hours to Milford Sound. This is one-way. You take the same road back home. The total driving hours were 9 ½ hours. A bit too much but at night whilst you are sleeping you are dreaming of those beautiful mountains and the Milford Sound. Our driver from Real NZ, Nathan was a responsible driver, professional with a touch of humour. He was very patient as he had to manage over 50 passengers. Not an easy task. I normally tip the drivers as you can appreciate the long driving they have to do and keep focused on the road. Weather: We were in Queenstown in late November but temperatures were dropping to 10°C at night and during the day it goes up to 18°C. The locals have told us that summer in New Zealand starts in late January and temperatures do not go over 30°C. Make sure to have a jacket and a cap. The only suggestion I would like to point out to Real NZ is that if they can stop every 100 minutes (1 hour and 40 minutes) as this will give the passengers some opportunity to shake their legs and get some fresh air. This trip takes roads by the mountain side which means the roads are going to be winding (curvy roads). The road to Milford Sound is beautiful as you get an overdose of mountains, nature, lakes, fjords, sheep farms, cow farms, deer farms, horses. Absolutely stunning!Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 January 2024
- chris QuartlyLondon, United Kingdom58 contributionsSome inside knowledgeAfter the 2 hour road trip by hire car from te Anau we arrived at Milford Sound for our real NZ 2 hour cruise pre booked from the UK Just a word of advice re parking! Don’t park in the fee paying car park at the end of the road near where the ferries go from About 10-15 mins away there are free car parks. In addition there is a free shuttle bus to and from the ferry quay so really its a no brainier not to park there The cruise was really good in excellent weather and a nice not in your face commentary One other thing coffee and cake etc is unavailable from the ferry terminal. You need to buy it ( prices reasonable) from the tourist centre about 5 mins walk away or alternatively BYOVisited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024

- bigmalkUnited Kingdom4 contributionsSpectacular and worthwhile tripWe drove by car to Milford Sound from Te Anau taking various stops along the way and these stops need to be factored in on planning the journey. Allow 2.5 hours for travel by car and add extra for stops. The road is weather dependent and parts of it are challenging. Check the weather and advisories before setting off plus ensure some provision in case of emergency. Parking at the car park at Milford Sound is tight. Meters have now been installed requiring payment in advance by card on the machine after guesstimating time required. Penalties for overstaying. I've been to Milford Sound on several occasions and suggest that travel by bus is now the way to go in terms of comfort and cost effectiveness. Travelling from Queenstown by road makes it a very long day and from Te Anau less so. Milford Sound is a spectacular Fiord although much smaller than Doubtful Sound which is my preference. There are a variety of vessels offering trips with commentaries and food options. There is a large embarcation area adjacent to the buses arriving and a short walk from the car park. Sandflies are an issue so repellents are essential kit. Milford Sound is definitely a bucket list adventure. The weather in Fiordland is very variable even within a single day. I have been fortunate to see Milford Sound on one of the clearest and brightest days and also on days where the visibility has been extremely limited by mist. If there are a few days to spare in Te Anau, best to check the weather forecast to avoid disappointment.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- pakabayAdelaide, Australia2,520 contributionsScenic CruisingWe spent last Thursday cruising the Fiordland National Park, starting with the stunning Milford Sound. With its countless waterfalls, dramatic peaks, some still snow covered and the dark, deep & still waters it really is a special wilderness. And being as remote as it is, we only saw three other boats and two aircraft during our time here.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2024
- Janka KBrno, Czech Republic8,707 contributionsA must-see place at New Zealand that will just take your breath awayI recommend to book your boat ride enough of time in advance, so you secure your place and don't stress out at the last minute. The boat ride takes about 2 hours and it's commented ride with a few stops at the waterfalls or the rocks with seals at the place. Count with a long driving time to get to the place and then to get back. So if you travel from Queenstown, leave early in the morning. There is a very lovely flower field on the way to the place/back that I recommend to stop at and take a few photos with the flowers. You will see a lot of people around, so you shouldn't miss the place.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 February 2024

Must see when visiting the South Island. I recommend staying in Te Anau so you can make an early start to the Milford Sound. It is about a 2 hour drive and if you leave early you will beat all the tour buses coming from Queenstown. The drive into Milford Sound is also a bonus as you drive through many different types of landscapes, some great stops along the road including Mirror Lakes and Chasam. We took a coach trip with cruise from Te Anau which enabled us to fully enjoy the scenic views etc.

VIP Milford Sound trip with Justin as our driver / guide was the best! We were picked up at our holiday Reception and driven in an 18 seater minibus with leather seats. Justin stopped off at all the best photo spots on the way there and on the way back, including Mirror Lakes and The Chasm. We left early to beat all the bigger coaches. Picnic lunch was $10, very good value and tea and coffee was free all day on the boat. Milford is a narrow Fiord compared to Doubtful Sound so we got close up to the waterfalls and seals. I can definitely recommend VIP Milford trip it was the highlight of our holiday.

The iconic Milford Sound is certainly a spectacle location including the amazing drive in. We have concerns however it’s being “oversubscribed” with way too many buses and tourists arriving by the hour. The tiny airport there seems to be like Mascot with flights of light planes and helicopters coming and going at a rapid rate. The boat terminal is a bit like catching a ferry in Sydney Harbour with so many arrivals and departures. I think there is a danger of this wonderful quite small pristine location being spoilt. It needs to be better contrôlée.

If you travel to New Zealand you really should include Milford Sound and Fiordland in your visiting places. For me, it was one of the top ten places of my life in travels that I have made in countries around the world. The landscape is fantastic, the views superb and all of them makes you loss breathing by being so beautiful. I recommend staying at the small and nice village of Te Anau to enter the Milford sound and Fiordland National Park. Do not loss Milford Sound and Fiordland!!!!

We took a day trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound and the whole journey was a scenic one. It was a long drive so please decide in the morning or you can stay nearer such as the lake Te Anau which is also a very nice place. After getting there there were lots of different kind of cruise or boat to enjoy. They sailed towards the sea and then back so you actually have the view twice. The cruise got close to a few waterfall and was actually so close that all people in the front would get real wet! If it was a sunny day any photo taken would be like the postcard.
Besides that, actually no much to see and do in Milford Sound, though when queueing up for the cruise there was tons of helicopters and small planes taking off for a scenic view.

Milford Sound is quite simply the most beautiful place on earth. It is breathtaking, and none of the photos I took could capture even a fraction of its beauty. You can google images of Milford Sound, but to really appreciate the beauty, you must experience it....and the only way to experience it is to go on a boat and cruise through it. The Boat Cruise is a tad on the expensive side at first glance.... $102 for an adult. However, when we completed the cruise, I remarked to my wife that I would have gladly paid $1000 for the experience. With a boat, you can get up and close to the Fiords, cruise by a waterfall, and see the Fiords from different angles and perspectives. The onboard commentary was very interesting and informative. There is no way for me to describe how awesome it is to experience.....all I can say is that it should become a must do on your bucket list.

This was amazing, we though the weather would be bad when we drove in the morning, but we were lucky, it was sun and dew at it was beautiful. The ferry driver from Discovery was amazing, funny and really relaxed, sounded like he loved his job. Thank you for a great experience

Despite recent problems with the roads Jucy put on a great trip with great commentary from Simon our driver, a very adequate packed lunch and a very modern boat, Gem of the Sound, which was more than big enough for our coach load so it was easy to move around. There was also ample opportunity to get very wet if you wanted to stand outside as the captain sailed through the waterfalls. Great photos could be be gained on board and at stopping points during the coach trip.

Take a boat cruise to fully appreciate this Fiord. You've just got to do it - especially during this quiet time of domestic tourism only.
Allow a leisurely 2 1/2 hours for the quite challenging drive, so you can take breaks along the way - a stop for a coffee at Mirror Lakes is recommended.
Parking is not cheap, unless you park about a 15 minute walk away from the tour boat terminal.

The actual cruise was good, and we have reviewed the specific company we went with. But the car park is separate from the cruise companies. Everyone arriving by personal vehicle, no matter what company cruising with, uses the same car park. But we weren't aware until arrival that the car park was chargeable. At time of visit it costs $10 per hour - with the recommendation to pay for at least 3 hours up front, as cruises generally last at least 2 hours.
If you want to avoid this charge on top of the cruise cost, use the park and ride 2 mins down the road, next to the airport. It is a smaller, and not organized car park. There is a shuttle that then runs to the cruise terminal, or a 20 minute walk (specially built gravel path away from road).

Where does the Nordam stop in Milford Sound? I see tours, but it only says M.S.?!?
We'd like to take a flight out of Queenstown, but couldn't tell if there was a stop.

Cruise liners do not dock in Milford Sound - they just float around in and out. We did a coach trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound and opted for the add on to fly back to Queenstown which was the experience of a life time. But unless you bribe the Captain - -
Cruises around NZ take you within all the attractions ( coach trip) except for Queenstown. Suggest you leave the liner at the end and fly to Queenstown if you really want to go there and hire a car and drive to Christchurch (days drive) or up the west coast. Roads in Nz at red ok but take twice as long as you think (hills & bends)

Is there a company that will transfer bags from Te Anau to Milford sound so we don’t have to carry everything?!

Hi, my husband and I are travelling in July this year, we are hiring a car, is it safe to self-drive to Milford Sound or would it be better to get the tour?
Written 3 January 2020
Yes, it’s safe to drive up yourself. You can stopped along the way at scenic spots. The only issues you need to take note is part of the route is through a tunnel are subject to weather conditions. Check the day before at Te Anua info centre for further info. Ensure you have full tank of petrol. Parking onsite will cost you but there is free parking just before you get to Milford Sound & a shuttle bus service picks you up & drops off free of charge.
Well worth the trip.

Nonsense people in a wheelchair are unable to do this tour. I have ALS and I would love to do this tour, maybe on a scooter my wife and my daughters can help me get on the boat!

I think you can do it, the crew seemed helpful for some when I was there and helped them on and off the boat. There might be some discomfort getting on and off, but go for it!

i am planning a trip to milford sound in mid November 2019, is the weather suitable if i ride by motorcycle ?
Written 28 June 2019
Hi i drove there in early December and it was beautiful the weather can be changeable so keep your eye on the reports in november but don't miss it, its a fantastic drive through the rainforest with views to die for, don't forget to stop as many places enroute as possible hopefully get some Kea encounters they are such amazing birds, the area just before the tunnel is a good Kea place, choose a sunny day for the best views but go anyway its brilliant, I choose the milford cruise company for the sound its a smaller vessel and less crowds only 12 other people on our trip would recommend it highly, try and stay in Te Anau the night before so you can get an early start, good pubs there and places to eat, and petrol, if you go early you will miss the crowds and have the road to yourself, Heaven !!!

I have 24 hours in Te Anau. I will be driving from Dunedin and stay a night in Te Anau. Can someone suggest what time I should arrive at Te Anau so I can do a cruise tour and a walking tour within 24 hours? I will then leave Te Anau for Queenstown.
Written 7 December 2018
It is approximately a 3hrs drive from Dunedin so working backwards with what you want to do, would suggest you leave Dunedin by 6 am and maximise your day. You will be able to do both the activities also there will be less traffic and roadwork stoppages
