About
Stewart Island Experience operates daily ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island all year around. Stewart Island is New Zealand's ultimate eco-tourism destination and the location of Rakiura National Park. During the one hour ferry crossing, keep a look out for the Mollymawks (Albatross) that often follow the vessel. Daily coach connections operate between Bluff and Invercargill, and in summer also to Te Anau and Queenstown (summer only).

Rough weather, but safe & seamless transfer
Apr. 2021
We used the Stewart Island ferry on our way from Oban back to Bluff and onward to Invercargill by coach.

The weather at the time or crossing was rough, to say the least. We waited in the waiting room prior to boarding as the staff loaded the luggage on to the ferry.
Even though it was sunny, we had wind speeds of 40 k/hour and 3-5 meter swells. The captain was excellent in keeping us informed and the staff were attentive to anyone who felt seasick. The crossing was an adventure in itself and an enjoyable experience if you could fight back the sea sickness.

On arriving in Bluff, the coach was ready for us to head to Invercargill once we picked up our luggage. Overall, after leaving at 12.30pm we got to Invercargill by 2.20 pm. (1 hour crossing by ferry and about 25 minutes coach - the driver does drop off people to IVC airport first if needed)

The service is quite reliable (ours was delayed by 20-30 minutes) if you have flight connections, but I wouldn't be aware that things can change rather quickly with the weather and it's good if you have a back up plan. Luckily we were booked the following morning out of Invercargill to Auckland and hence it did not stress us out if the ferry was delayed.

*Tip: Fly one way and take the Ferry the other. Great to experience the different perspectives of crossing the Foveaux strait

Perfect crossing twice
Apr. 2021
I guess we were very lucky with the weather. The only thing I think is stupid is that you have to wear facemasks whereas on the Cook straight Ferry no one has to wear a Facemask. But the boat is a nice catamaran and goes very fast.

Cruise & Ulva Island

Well, we’d like to thank Jon from this team, for being fantastic when we found ourselves in a quandary! We were in the completely wrong place for our cruise & thankfully the Call Centre had put on our booking where we were, when we realised we were in the wrong place! Jon come & picked us up, so this meant we could do the cruise! Fantastic customer service & a great tour!! Thank you again!!

Good but pricey

The cost of transport is a bit steep. $79 per person each way.
It's a catamaran and is a bit noisy.
OK journey.

Luggage problems
Nov. 2020
Our ferry didnt leave till 3pm and our accomodation ended at 10am. We were happy to loiter around for this period but were concerned for our luggage which was just left in bins for this period. With little or no security. As we had laptops and other valuables i felt the company could provide a more secure system and i also found the staff unhelpful in this regard. When we deposited our luggage there was one bin. When we returned there were five and we had to scramble through all the bins and other peoples luggage to locate our luggage. Not a great experience . I’m sure the company can improve on this

Take it carefully; its ok

The strait between Bluff and Stewart Island has a reputation for being rough and often it is. The ferry is a catamaran taking about 80 passengers. I did what I always do on such ventures: Sat at the back of the lounge inside the boat and closed my eyes. The journey takes about 70 minutes and was uneventful, although the seas were rocking a bit in the centre of the strait. Refreshments are available although few took the opportunity. Our return trip a few days later was a bit rougher but we all made it safely.

A great end to a fantastic holiday
Jan. 2021 • Couples
We cruised from Oban to Bluff and then caught the bus to Invercargill (all pre-booked), having flown in to Oban 11 days prior. The bus dropped us at our motel, which was greatly appreciated! The sailing was reasonably smooth and quick (1 hour). The whole trip took about 100 minutes. Basic facilities at the Oban terminal (lounge upstairs, where you can watch the un/loading and catch some last views across the harbour). Free tea & coffee on board, along with snacks to purchase.
