Moke Lake is a short drive from Queenstown but you quickly leave the town behind and feel like you are miles from civilisation. There are two good walks here, a short pleasant stroll around the lake or it is the start of the back way to either Arthurs Point (4-5 hours away) or up over the ridge and down into... More

One of our favorite things we did in Queenstown. Short drive from downtown Queenstown but feels completely out of town - gravel roads, lots of scenery, and very few people (at least when we went). Short (2 hours of so) hike up the hills and around the lake, with sheep and cows roaming freely around the area.

This is a lovely drive up through steep high-country farmland to a wee lake far from the crowded tourist areas.

Drove here just to check it out, really awesome sport, dead quiet and amazing views. Beware of the sand flies they are pretty aggressive! Good for camping, fishing, kayaking....etc. Ideally have a 4wd but not essential if its dry

This was a beautiful albeit muddy walk around the lake. It was so quite and peaceful yet not far from Queenstown at all.

If you are campervanning or camping, Moke Lake has a great DOC site for $8 (I think) per person per night. Has clean drop loos and an undercover area. Camp spots are nice and private, bit of sheep poo and sand flies around though. The lake is super cold! But good views none the less. If you camp there there... More

The lake is located around 12 km from Queenstown and is georgeous for camping. We spent an afternoon there, swam in the lake and did some fab walks. There is some good fishing too although we didn't try it. Perfect place to spend a day. Facilities included toilets, cooking shelter and running water. The views were fascinating since it was... Even if you don't go on one of the many hikes around Moke Lake, if you're fortunate enough to have perfect weather conditions the view from the carpark will take your breath away! We were so lucky to have a cloudless sky and no wind when we visited. I couldn't believe how clear the water was and how perfect the... More
