Experience the thrill of body boarding down the Kawarau River with the original riversurfing company! Forget about any white water activity you`ve ever seen. This is Serious Fun Riversurfing. The most exciting, exhilarating and interactive water activity on the planet. Each trip begins in a calm section of the river; the guides give you a full safety briefing and teach you the basics in riversurfing before you set off on your white water adventure. We have the world’s most experienced and qualified guides and 100% safety record since 1989. Where did it all begin? Jon Imhof, a surfer from Hawaii, came to Queenstown to go snowboarding and he liked Queenstown so much that he decided to stay for summer. Missing the waves of the ocean, he looked for an alternative and came up with the crazy idea to follow the rafters down the Shotover River and surf waves on his body board. Although the rapids were great, he found it was too shallow and decided to go down the Kawarau River instead, and the sport of riversurfing was born.In 1989, with riversurfing in high demand, Jon established Serious Fun Riversurfing, the original riversurfing company. A few years later, after looking for other suitable locations around the world, Jon started a sister company on the Zambezi in 1995 and some of the African guides took the sport up to the White Nile in Uganda, and to this day, these are the only three places in the world you can go riversurfing!

My family went with Pav and Benji and loved the whole trip! Our group of eight was always in their sights and never felt worried because they were always there! They knew every inch of the river, gave us all the gear we needed, and a little snack at the end too! If you want to try something unusually cool... More

It was a great first time experience for us. It's challenging but we felt we were in the hands of professionals. Dallas and Rose were great! Highly recommend doing this if you like a bit of adventure and adrenaline. If you aren't a good swimmer, I'd suggest going for Level 1 or 2, Level 3 is pretty intense!

The day was so much fun, the instructors are fantastic, informative, friendly, great sense of humour. Took everyone at their ability, encouraged but didn't push. Felt completely safe with them. Dallas came to my rescue and never let go of my board until I felt some confidence back, they know the river well and can read the rapids expertly. Thanks... More

River surfing was a great and unique experience and well worth doing. Two in our group found the currents too overwhelming so you do need to have a reasonable base level of fitness to do this activity. For the rest of us we enjoyed the challenges of the rapids and survived! The first part of the course was the most... More

This is hands down one of the best things to do if traveling to Queenstown for any period of time. The bus picks you up right in Queenstown and brings you to the site. There you are suited up in a wetsuit and life jacket to stay warm and afloat in the river. Then you are given some training and... More

Hands down. The guides are excellent and the quality of the river is amazing. They were friendly and knowledgeable about the river. If you are reading this and are going during the open season, you NEED to do this.

Great fun with great trip leaders to guide you and help out. Ok for anyone who is confident in the water. Got a bit 'hairy' at times, but never scary. So glad I did it. Only downside is the photographs are too expensive really.

There was myself, my partner and my partner's sister doing the river boarding and we did the activity on a windy/pretty chilly day in January. My partner's sister had done the trip 12 years ago and had loved it so we wanted to try it out too! We weren't disappointed! The guides were great (Dallas and Dan) and explained everything... More
