I live not far from this cafe/garden and had driven past it nearly every weekend for an entire whitebait season, going from our home to the river, for a couple of years before finally stopping in to check out the place. What a revelation! The owners are a lovely couple: very friendly and justifiably proud of what they have created.... More

We came out to look at the craft fair that was on in the grounds and also to re-acquaint ourselves with the gardens and cafe. Unfortunately, the service was so slow we had no time to look round the gardens - although they looked beautiful from the cafe windows (despite the grey, drizzly weather). The cafe was by no means... We had coffee and a break here recently. It was nice sitting out on the table looking out over the old pit with regenerating vegetation.

Possibly on the slighty dearer side. We had a blue cod ciabatta sandwich at $12 and a chicken, cranberry & brie ciabatta at $10. Maybe at these prices I would expect more filling or a small side salad. Enjoyed our coffees but would suggest the owner uses tongs and not his hands when plating your cakes & slices. The cafe... Mum and I went to have a look the outlook from the café is really nice and not to far out of town only 10 mins from south Invercargill heading towards Gorge Road. We went out there for a look and lunch, didn't walk round the gardens as these are extensive but what turned out to be a great brunch,... More

My wife and I decided on a whim to have a look and try a coffee and devenshire scon for lunch. We were not disapointed. As a "local" I never knew the place existed. We will return and explore the garden and the flying wildlife. Restuarant staff were informative and friendly.

Great food choices. The homemade pies are sooo good. Enjoyed wondering around the garden, with all it's spring colours. The garden is so sheltered, you can just take your time, keep an eye out for the ducks. Very welcoming owner/operators. Will certainly go again.

Great historical site on the Gorge Road with a good present day cafe well protected by the elements with nice food and drink, and served by friendly people. Another great place to go in to eat and drink and explore the secret garden. Another fantastic place to visit in or near Invercargill.

What you can do with an old coal mine. The view from the cafe was wonderful with the autumn colours. The food in the cafe was very good - home made pies.

We called in for a coffee during a "sunny day drive", our first visit since the new owners took over. We intended having just a quick drink but the gluten-free chocolate brownie tempted me. The server "persuaded" me to have the brownie deluxe (excellent up-selling technique!), which turned out to be a piece of warmed chocolate brownie nestled between two... More
