Worth a detour

We went here twice, once early in the morning and saw sea lions both times, plus sea birds and also a bunch of rare Stewart Island shags

From the gravel road in which we lucky enough to run across a husband and wife team transferring sheep from paddock to paddock. Finally arrived at the lighthouse which was stunning and met some gorgeous seals too. Well worth the visit. Warning there are drop toilets

Great history, stunning view. Site of one of the last wooden lighthouses built in New Zealand, built in response to the worst sea disaster off the NZ coast. An attraction with ample parking, picnic area, restroom facilities and good information panels about the history and wildlife.

You reach the parking lot near the Lighthouse on a gravel road. Just a short walk to the lighthouse. More interesting is the beach on the left side, most of the times you will see sealions. We were lucky and saw some young ones playing and fighting with each other near the mother - she was really upset. Please be... More

We visited Waipapa many times during our stay 3 year stay in NZ. It is a timeless and serene place where you can experience the eternal magic of the infinite South Pacific while just sitting on the rocks and watching the wildlife ( especially the sea lions ! ). We met many kindred spirits from all over the world during... More

After missing out seeing sea lions driving down from the Catlins we finally got to see these creatures sunning themselves on the beach. Parking and a little walk down to the beach. Information signs about the history of the lighthouse etc.

Short trip along gravel to this beach, easy access to see sea lions, information about the worst civilian ship wreck.

Just 15 K from Fort Rose on the way to Curio Bay and only 3 or 4 minutes from the main highway. It is very rare that you are not treated to Sea Lions playing on or near the beach . Whenever I have visitors I manage to take them to here to get a real feel for New Zealand... More

Great place to visit (best in fair weather as little to no shelter outdoors). Easy walking and great for picnics. Also clean DOC toilets available. All old buildings have long been removed, lighthouse is all that is left. It is a long way down at the end of 'Waipapa Lighthouse Road' (dead end). Great spot for lunch or dinner if... More

This has got to be one of the easiest to access lighthouses in NZ. Fascinating history being the scene of NZ's worst civil maritime disaster. The sea lions put on a great display. I think this is one of Southlands best coastal attractions and it all costs nothing but for a voluntary donation.
