- TinaOmokoroa Beach, New Zealand20 contributionsIt's steep...On our way out of Dunedin we had to stop at this Spot and it didn't disappoint. We were lucky and very few people were there. We walked up the top definitely a must if you go. Good exercise to start the day 😂. Kids had fun and we also got certificates for them they are so cute. Worth a stop while in Dunedin.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 January 2024
- Michael CDerby, United Kingdom1,980 contributionsRidiculously steepUnfortunately, it was pouring with rain when we reached the bottom of this ridiculously steep street. Despite the rain we walked up to the start of the steepest stretch but then decided that attempting to climb any further was going to pit too much strain on our hearts and limbs. Nevertheless, this is s fascinating stretch of road.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 February 2024
- kelly11584Auckland Central, New Zealand176 contributionsExcellent placeMy brother took me there when I first go to Dunedin and we walked up it. It was hard but I make it up as I thought it will be easy. It was easy but then I noticed it was getting harder as I was keeping up with my brother but my brother was ahead of me as I was getting slower. We had to move out the way for cars but I was glad I got up to the top and we got to take a few photos. We leave and we went down the stairs which my brother said the stairs are easy to go up as we walked up the road. I went slowly down the stairs as I might fall down and brother went down faster than me but he didn't mind waiting for me. I got to read the sign on the top and I can see a lot of people come to get their photos taking as there were 2 ladies there keep taking photos. I will go again and see if I can do it better next time.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 March 2024

Thr steepest Street in Dunedin is an ordinary street in the city, but it is on tourist itinerary because it is the steepest Street in the world. We were told that the gradient is 30 degrees. Quite steep for a walk, particularly for seniors.

This street is steep. Some of my fitter companions walked up this street in under 4 minutes. Great views from the top. There is a competition in Dunedin not sure when it is held to see who can climb this street and return in the shortest amount of time.

We took the city bus there and although not as picturesque as Lombard St. in San Francisco I liked the rugged urban character it maintains. Enjoy the walk up while practising some trick photography. There is a bench to rest on at the top and a water fountain. Named after William Baldwin, newspaper founder who subdivided the city.

According to The Guinness Book of Records, this is the world’s steepest street. It is made of concrete as tar would run downhill on a hot day and it also provides a better grip in the frosty winters. Instead of a footpath, the street has stairs which run up the side of the road. It’s a steep climb but is a great accomplishment to reach the top.
The views from the top are lovely.
Only residents are allowed to drive up the street but we found parking along the main road.

According to the Guinness World Records, until recently Baldwin Street was the steepest street in the world. Such claims, however, rarely go unchallenged., Various streets in San Francisco and Los Angeles also laid claim to the title. A village in Wales has recently been awarded the prize.Balwdin Street is famous for the Baldwin St Gut Buster, a race up and down the hill. Baldwin Street is also famous for the "Running of the Balls" or more correctly the Cadbury Jaffa Race. Jaffas are orange-coloured candy balls with chocolate inside. The rampaging Jaffas can get up quite a speed -- up to 100 km/hour (62 niles an hour).

The locals sneered at our enthusiasm to visit Baldwin Street, stating that there are many steep streets in Dunedin. But there is something significant about walking up THE steepest street in the WORLD. Although it lost its title in 2019 to a challenger in North Wales, it regained its status from the Guinness Book of Records in April 2020. Steep it is and definitely worth a visit! We were the only 2 people there at the time and enjoyed meandering to the top where there is a mural, water drinking fountain and bench (in desperate need of repainting).

I took a leisurely morning walk up the steepest street "in the world" I left the hotel at 7.10 to walk Baldwin Street by myself, 5 years after I was first here. a long story why I didn't do it then. Looking up it seems a formidable attempt, walking it I realised I was right. Using every post, branch and fence I could find to pull myself up I finally made it to the top.
The view was worth it but I felt like a heart attack waiting to happen. When I arrived back at the hotel I was informed that Baldwin Street had been surpassed in steepnes in 2019, but I don't know which street has the mantle. All that work to be 2nd best. Now I have to find the steepest again. Dunedin itself has magnificent architecture, churches and a railway station which is truly something else, such a lot of history.

This is worth the effort ! It is definitely an extremely steep street. We found car parking at the bottom easily and just around the corner is public toilets and a dairy if needed.
There are 265 steps to the right hand side of the street (going up), which does help significantly, however note the last part does not have steps. You get a lovely view and a novelty seat at the top along with a water fountain. Great to wait and see cars drive up. Hard to believe us a person has actually roller skated up there and another person did it by pogo stick !!

Clearly the town now accepts that this is not the steepest street in the world as the I-Site map says “formally the steepest..”. What I can say is that it is steep and not overly long. In good weather this is probably more fun but when we arrived it was raining and to be honest that dampened enthusiasm for many. It is a residential street so beware cars if you decide to climb up it.

Coming from the past its a good place to visit when in the area of Dunedin.
If you have your own transport drive along the way to Baldwin Street.
Pay attention to the street signs and there is some historical information at the foot of the street.
There is also a cafe a street along if you wish, otherwise there are t/a and other cafes near by to try out in the morning.
Lots of people around including tours, and the street is actually steeper than it looks getting further in degree as you walk your way up across/on/along the street!
Good view point and generally good fun challenge walking up to get your photo.
Certainly rivals those of SF USA and Hba TAS and parts of Europe in terms of steepness.
Worth a look if you have transport.
