Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you have limited time you can enjoy the Mt Cargill skyline but driving north out of Dunedin on SH1. Turn right off SH 1 and follow the roads up to the Cowan Road. This starts as a tarmaced road but becomes a gravel track which can be followed up to a small car park below the mast. (You can drive to the top but that doesn’t help with the walk).
You can the walk up the track to the Nt Cargill’s true summit 676m and a trig point near the big mast. A orientation table is just beyond the mast is available. Slightly backtracking you can pick up a path to Mt Buttars 617m. This has some nice rocks to scramble up on. Returning to the track you can continue to Mt Holmes and the Organ pipes. The track leads to the base of the Organ Pipes. You can get to the top on a scrambly track on the right or a rock climb on the left. From the top of the Organ pipes you can fight through the bush on a track to the summit of Mt Holmes 575m. Return by the same route although the summits of Mt Buttars and Mt Cargill can be bypassed to minimise reclimbing.
Return time took 2 hours.
I hope you get good weather to enjoy the views.

This is a terrific scenic hike for anyone that enjoys the outdoors. While it is easily accessible and open to the public, this is MODERATELY PHYSICALLY DEMANDING. There were kid’s groups that did part of the trail, but a middle aged lady in our group could not get past the first 50 yards before returning to the bus. For older adults, only do if you are used regular long walks or hikes.

We walked up to Mount Cargill via the Organ Pipes track, it was a hard slog but once we got to the top it was so worth it. Views for miles and miles. We took the binoculars along and it felt like we could just about see Queenstown! There is of course also the option of driving up for the views, but that’s really cheating isn’t it.

There is a few ways up to the top of Mount Cargill. The Escartment track and Graham Bush which is in another review. You can go on At the end of Clunny Street is Bethunes Gully and the track works its way up the valley. The path is a good path and there is a decent play park and bbq area. We managed to get 3/4 of the way up before the snow set in and we had to turn back due to bad choice of footwear.

If you like off the beaten path walks, long vistas, and drives-/ definitely take the time to head up. Striking views that give one the true sense of geography. Especially at dusk.

We booked an excursion from our Crystal Cruise to climb Mount Cargill. We were accompanied by two amazing young guides. The skies were clear almost everywhere but on top of Mount Cargill. The climb is very steep but when you get to the organ pipes, if you can see them through the clouds, it is almost worth all that effort. I wish I could remember the name of the company our guides worked for because they certainly deserve a shout out. I would not recommend this trip for anyone afraid of heights or inexperienced in strenuous hikes.

If the weather is clear, the views from the top are quite majestic. The hike down to Organ Pipes and back is moderately difficult, but quite enjoyable.

The Cloud Forest of Leith track from Sullivans Dam is quite well made with wooden steps and boardwalks. The second half of the walk along the Escarpment track is a bit wilder and quite muddy, but still clear to follow and well marked. At a leisurely pace allow 3 to 4 hours (one way).

How do I get a guided tour of Mt. Cargill? Will be there early January and my cruise line tour was sold out before we could book. I can’t find a way to book through Trip Advisor either.
