The western part of the summit road is fully open to motor vehicle traffic, the eastern only partially - the remainder is open to bicycles.
[Note: because of recent fires in early March 2017 both roads are closed - should re-open anytime soon.]

Following the well publicised fire devastation with state of emergency following the very extensive fires in this area, a considerable rehabiltation will be neded to put it back from its charred envrionment to a sencic and pleasant vista of the hills overlooking the city
Take the Gondola to the top of Port Hills and enjoy the magnificent views over Lyttleton town and port, across almost to the Southern Alps and the wonderful coastal views whilst walking araound the rim of an extinct volcano.
We had a few days in ChCh then drove over the hills to Akaroa. Nice easy drive over with awesome views all the way.

From Port Hills you can see the coastline right up to Kaikoura on a clear day. Views from the snowy Alps to the pacific and a terrific view of Christchurch thrown in. Loads of walking/cycling tracks. What's not to ❤️
