- Ken HIpswich, United Kingdom1,059 contributionsNot The Greatest NZ Seaside AreaSomewhat run down, particularly the street near the pier. Reminiscent of an english seaside town out of season. Whole area needs investment if it harbours tourist destination aspirations. Pier is nice to walk out on, but do be aware that there are lot of fishermen and fish mess on the walkway particularly in the 'no fishing' zone at the end. Probably not worth the drive out from central Christchurch - not New Zealand at its best.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 February 2023
- Simon DAuckland, New Zealand712 contributionsMonday afternoon wanderingNot far from Sumner where we had gone to visit and thought we would have a look given it wasn't a bad day. Pretty quiet on the day, although may have been due to it being a Monday. A good sized modern concrete pier stretches out and was quite busy with fishermen. A big (and also quite modern) library is right on Marine Parade at the start of the pier as well. Some nice family friendly facilities and park next door. Was worth the trip to see it.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 March 2023

Parked at the public parking area and went for a walk along the pier. We had a lovely stroll along the pier watching the locals fishing and enjoying the beach. Very popular with the locals as well. The public library is linked to the end of the pier as well, with fantastic views of the beach. Apart from the pier and the library there wasn’t much else to see in town.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2023

Shops all run down. A bad look.
Many boarded up.
Two people in the street. No traffic.
Beach was great. Good to see many new houses and refurbs going on in marine parade. Both in North and South.
A really sad decline from what it was despite all the great facilities on the beach front.

Lovely place to come for a walk along the beach and the pier. A couple of nice cafes for a coffee and food.

Lots of potential, but could use a good clean-up of the debris (not rubbish, thankfully). Wide beach, nice sand. Not a lot going on nearby; many of the shops and restaurants were closed -- some "until February." Seemed odd. Pier may be a good spot to fish, but bring your own tackle. Whole area surprisingly deserted on a lovely late-summer day. Of course, that's possibly a good thing....

Lots of places to grab a coffee, a drink, a meal or a desert. Some quirky little shops where you can shop locally. There is a supermarket and two bottle stores.

New Brighton Beach
Long, wide, open and exposed beach.
Some go here to surf, walk their dogs, play in the sand dunes, walk along the pier, go to the kids playground, the library, the markets, the newly opened hot pools.
The sand is soft and golden.
Great for all seasons but can be a bit fresh if an Easterly wind is blowing.

We can out here to see some of the SCAPE sculptures, but it was a bt too windy to really enjoy the beach. Nice to walk along the pier, good views back over the hills.

It is a place suitable for families spending a day. Children will enjoy the water fun there. The view is nice with fresh breeze. There are restaurants nearby.
