Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a great beach (4 surf clubs....)
The pier and childrens paddling pools are superb.
The sea front is being further upgraded.
New Brighton is a little seedy and run down, but if it got right imvestment it would become just too busy.
Appart from the beach and childrens play area it has an excellent fish and chip shop, and good coffee from switch cafe, or the coffee shack along by the Surf club.
Bird life on the estuary (inland side of the spit) is always interesting, and you might also see the local dragon boat crews in training on the Avon river.
Let's hope it stays a secret backwater.

Not far from Sumner where we had gone to visit and thought we would have a look given it wasn't a bad day.
Pretty quiet on the day, although may have been due to it being a Monday. A good sized modern concrete pier stretches out and was quite busy with fishermen. A big (and also quite modern) library is right on Marine Parade at the start of the pier as well. Some nice family friendly facilities and park next door.
Was worth the trip to see it.

Somewhat run down, particularly the street near the pier. Reminiscent of an english seaside town out of season. Whole area needs investment if it harbours tourist destination aspirations. Pier is nice to walk out on, but do be aware that there are lot of fishermen and fish mess on the walkway particularly in the 'no fishing' zone at the end. Probably not worth the drive out from central Christchurch - not New Zealand at its best.

Never been to the New Brighton Pier so this was a first. What a great area, just wished I'd had more time to explore. A walk along the Pier was fun...lots of people fishing, people surfing to watch and....seagulls

New Brighton is really just a short drive from the Christchurch CBD but it does feel a world away with its seaside resort feel. There is a nice enough beach, good pier and a cafe, with a few shops and supermarket just around the corner. It does feel like another era, in a good way. A nice way to spend some relaxing time in Christchurch.
There is a good playground nearby too.
Well worth a visit.

Scenic spot to chill out. Watch the waves breaking, maybe dotted with a few surfers. Take a stroll along the pier towards the favourite fishing spots at the far end, or a wander along the extensive sandy shoreline. Beautiful views, especially to the south. Public hot pools close by also.

Interesting few hours. Smooth and flat. You can go fishing off the pier in your wheelchair even. Safe for wheelchairs and fun for the family. There is a library nearby and a restaurant that will even give you a great cheeseboard and coffee. Worth a visit.

Firm sand, when the tide is not in, to walk for many kilometers.
Safe swimming with several surf life-saving clubs to swim at.
Only warm enough for swimming January-February.
The New Brighton Pier (300m long) is good to walk out on.
Has heated pools and sauna next to the pier.
Great views to Kaikoura and Godley Heads.

Agree with otehr reviews that this place has potential BUT it seems to have failed in realising it. It not only has no lustre but an entire lack of lustre - surpising given the beach and proximity to the CBD/city area. Would have thought this would be the 'happening place' of Christchurch. Not really god mych to do with being overly popular - more just looks uncared for and tired - strange given its obviously natural assets and investment potential.

Lovely flat beach, easy walking and lovely views.
The walk along the pier and area is easy and well worth it.
Well maintained area, very popular with people exercising, sight seeing and fishing.
