Great (open water) swimming
Feb. 2020
This is the smallest of three bays accessed from the road from Lyttelton to Govenors bay in the Lyttelton caldera. Along with the Cass and Rapaki these are the best open water swimming locations near Christchurch. It's the pacific, the water is warm, it's (the Lytelton caldera) a large bay with an easterly mouth, this means that even when there's a good 3-3 metre swell out in the ocean there's only 25-35 cm swell in these bays. They're pretty much always swimable. Corsair is popular, this means there's usually other swimmers, and being kiwi's they're friendly folk, so safety isn't such an issue. In the past been issues with jet-ski boats etc. and there are still plenty of yachts (smaller sailing) moored and using the bays, but there is a motorised boat exclusion boundary, marked with yellow buoys (several of which are conveniently almost exactly 500 metres out from the shore) so this problem has been 'solved'. Corsair is also sheltered from the Easterlies, so in addition to being quite wave free, you also don't get any noticable winds, (or surface water flows). If (and it's a very small if...) there's a negative it's the water clarity. Because of the removal of the trees from the caldera sides some 100 or so years ago, there's a big build up of sediment land washoff. This makes the water a little cloudy, visibility less than 1 metre, but it doesn't impact upon the swimming. Oh yes and there's a floating pontoon, in the middle of the bay, always handy for sunbathing :)

Spectacular views of the bay and nearby port. The water was so blue and clear and the hills and mountains around made for a fabulous photo.

Enjoy A Beach Day Close To Town
Jan. 2019 • Friends
Corsair Bay is my favourite beach spot near Christchurch. This is quite a small bay with great views, and the colour of the water is quite nice, considering this is not the Caribbean! You need to drive there and park before the beach, beware that it gets a bit crowded as many families head there when it's sunny!

Sea air, sheltered and perfect on a Summer's day!
Nov. 2018 • Family
Christchurch can be very breezy in Summer and this bay is sheltered. Great swimming and paddleboarding, and close to the shops in Lyttelton if you need refreshments. It attracts a crowd on a hot day but there is a lot of space and you can secure a good spot on the grass verges. Popular with children as it is shallow and stays warm for swimming.

Lovely safe little bay for the kids.

We went to Corsair Bay on Waitangi Day for a picnic. A lovely spot for anyone. Great playground for the children plus a very safe swimming bay which doesn’t get too deep too quick.

Stunning

The views around the bay are stunning. We stopped and visited a place where my husband stayed 50 years ago. It is almost as if things haven’t changed much in that time. A peaceful, pleasant spot.

Stopped here on our way from Lyttelton to Governor's Bay. A beautiful spot to go for a walk and check out some amazing views.
