Day visit

A quaint place to visit and get amongst the locals. Grab a coffee and enjoy the views. The locals are only too willing to have a chat and share their local knowledge.

Entry to Lyttleton via tunnel or summit road gives impressive views. We had breakfast and light lunch there and both were good. As gateway to the Banks peninsula, it's a stunning starting point. History of the port fascinating and it's the start of the early settlers' bridle oath, which is worth the climb- luckily for us, not carrying most of... More

Tybpical working port. Nothing of interest, nothing pretty. A few basic eating places. No visible beach. Pretty poor town. No reason to go

We started here on a drive around the bay. The town itself is small and mainly an industrial port. Follow the road west and try the hiking trails at the top of Dyers Pass.

Lyttelton suffered quite a bit of damage from the 2010 quake and section of the town were closed to tourists as a result. It was an interesting town, with good restaurants and nice shopping.

Took the bus from the Christchurch terminal - only $4 to to Lyttelton. Enjoyed walking around the port, up the steep street to the top of hill/town and crisscrossing down the hill to look at the enchanting (from the outside) villas, took a stroll through a graveyard to read the headstone (very sad stories told by many of them), walked... Lived here for several years prior to the 2011 earthquake but this area is still special. If you have a few hours free definitely pop through the tunnel for breakfast/coffee/lunch or a drink. And take a walk around. Any day is good but if you want to see the place buzzing visit on a Saturday morning when the market is... More

A quirky little town well worth a visit. Went To Diamond Harbour from here and climbed Mount Herbert.
