The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

We had high expectations for this scenic train ride. We built our travel itinerary around being able to catch the train in Greymouth and cross the mountains to Christchurch. Our only real comparison was the train in Peru from the Sacred Valley to Lake Titikaka. This train ride was not nearly as scenic, and it was not particularly comfortable. The... More

The station is easy to get to and the staff are really friendly. We liked the relaxing speed of the train all the way to Greymouth because you could make the most of the scenery. Bring a rain coat as it is likely to rain on the way. The viewing carriages are completely open and are cold so rug up.... More

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip on the Tranzalpine from Christchurch to Greymouth. The carriages are roomy and the seats comfortable. The windows are huge, so the viewing is pretty unrestricted. I was surprised at the variety of good food available from the dining car. It wasn't expensive either. Every seat has it's own headphones, so if you want to listen... More

Unforgettable ride. Went through many tunnels. Enjoyed the food from the cafe and our packed snacks.

Though we passed some stunning scenery the weather was not on our side. The Greymouth side of the journey was grey and dismal so we didn't get to see Mt Cooke - a disappontment for all. Towards the end of the journey the weather cheered up a bit but we were already in the Canterbury area where the terrain is... More

Our tour group boarded the train at Arthur's Pass for the ride to Christchurch. Despite partly cloudy weather, we still enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The open cars are great for taking photos but it was very windy given the train speed. Seats in the cars are comfortable and there were headsets for listening to narrations for the trip. Refreshments are... More

The train has been revamped in recent years and is clean and comfortable with audio commentary. the cafe car has some seats in it as well and has a variety of food such as pies. The coffee is not great but they do have a limited selection of wines. The views are splendid and it takes about 4.5 hours to... More

The scenery on this journey is absolutely breathtaking. If you are heading towards Greymouth this is a very good travel option. Even for those staying in Christchurch it makes a good day trip, leaving in the morning, having lunch in Greymouth, then returning in the afternoon

Completed the train trip during winter (June) it had been snowing and the scenery was awesome. Got trip the train was exciting, remember doing it when I was a kid traveling to Greymonth for the holidays on the farm. Very relaxing, smooth traveling. We stayed for a couple of nights in Greymonth, my birthplace so a special place. If you... More
