The Thackers arrived possibly even before the First Four Ships and have been I'm bay since. They run a VERY good museum and hold a fantastic Waitangi Day celebration, much more low-key and fun-filled the the main one in the North Island, similar to the one in Kaiapoi. There are lots of treat bays on the peninsula but the Thackers... More

What an interesting place! This museum doesn't look like much from the road but step inside and you will be amazed at the treasures it contains. There is much to see and digest and it is fascinating to get such a thorough glimpse into the history of the area, particularly the early Maori settlement and colonial life. We could have... More

A warm welcome to the museum is assured, The buildings are authentic, the museum carefully laid out and informative. The colonial section gives a good perspective of life over 150 years ago. Very worthwhile on a fine day. A visit to the beach and a walk around the bay completes a nostalgic journey.

Have visited many Museums in New Zealand, but this one is incredible. The time & thought laying it out is amazing but the content is something you'd be hard-pressed to find many other places. The outside buildings house the history and life style of ancestors, but the main Maori collection of artefacts housed in what looks like a reasonable new... More

This museum is incredibly reasonable for all that you see and learn. Then a lovely café with hugely generous portions and home cooked food. We stayed there a long time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thankyou so much for a wonderful and memorable morning.

This museum is a must see if you are travelling on Banks Peninsula near Akaroa. Okains Bay is a short drive from Akaroa and you can take the summit road from Akaroa to get there. The museum has the most amazing collection of Maori and NZ history and artefacts showing the way of life of the people of NZ from... More

For a small local Museum it was extremely well done, enjoyed it very much. Steep drive into Okains Bay with beautiful views on the drive.

This is a delightful place albeit off the beaten track somewhat. However, well worth a visit especially if combined with the beach which is not so far away. Loads of artefacts to see and a good place to hang a while to get the vibe.

An amazing and unique collection of Maori as well as Colonial artefacts, telling a well rounded story of New Zealand history both at a local level and national. The Maori collection is vast and culturally very significant and well worth a day to explore all the little areas housed lovingly within the museum. You are allowed to take photos too... More

We thoroughly enjoyed this museum and wish we had given ourselves longer to walk around! The Maori style houses were a particular highlight and the vast collection of well looked after artefacts. Well worth a visit.
