the cost and the fact that, eventhough it's in the top 10 of best train trips in the world (how so, is beyond me) but this train goes into a tunnel...and a long one at that!...but wait there's more: it's the nicest part of crossing New Zealand and you're in an expensive over priced train in a tunnel. Hell, for... More

Was lovely to sit back and see the sights - most enjoyable. Other than on our arrival back into Chch the train stopped about 10 kms from Rolleston because it was told there was a tree over the line - we waited about an hour and there was NO tree!

Wonderful trip, crossing the flat Canterbury plains into the mountains to end on the beautiful West coast, absolutely stunning scenery. Best to stay over night in Greymouth so you can sample the Westcoast hospitality, otherwise the turn around time is too short for exploring.

Amazing train journey' the landscape changes all the time which is visually great. Best time to go is just after it has snowed, magical!

Have always wanted to do this - and it was certainly worth the wait. Great service Food ok..ish Views were breath taking - seeing part of the country side from a different level - this road I have travelled loads of times but this was on the TranzAlpine usually by road so it was great.
