Nice walk. Put off by greedy cafe
Feb. 2021
We enjoyed a nice peaceful walk to the waterfall with a slight deviation off to climb the " Big rock"
It was good excercise.

We had planned to enjoy a long black at the cafe but they wanted over $5 for this simple drink claiming there was a surcharge for the public holiday. We were there on Saturday and the Waitangi holiday was on Monday so we went somewhere else for our refreshments.

Group of caravanners enjoyed the facilities on offer at Orton Bradley Park. Enjoyed the guardhouse entrance and welcome from caretaker. Good camping sites. Power and water.

lovely hikes around pastures and up the hills
Jan. 2020
There's an entrance fee of $ 5.
From the parking/cafe you can choose to walk in various directions and length.
Could spend the whole day reaching a few hilltops.
We got a special map before ($ 2.50).

Cafe review only
Dec. 2019 • Couples
We didn't do any of the walks (which do look good) but just stopped at the cafe for a milkshake. At $9 a pop for a thickshake we thought it should be pretty big so decided to share. Out came 300 MLS ( at most) of chocolate flavoured milk (like you buy at the dairy) with a dollop of artificial cream. The worst attempt at a thickshake we've ever experienced anywhere in NZ.

We then had a quick look at some of the historic buildings. The cafe is quaint and had some great historic pics. The historic classroom which looked interesting was locked and raised up so couldn't see in the windows. The other historic cottage was locked but you could at least see in the windows.

Lovely setting and lovely drive out there. But very much WIP I think.

Brilliant Views
Apr. 2019 • Solo
Walk from Orton Bradley Part up to the tablelands, the waterfall and the lookout. It was steep but the views were worth it and the walk down was much appreciated after doing the big slog up the hill. Fabulous place for Campers. I didn't get to go to the cafe unfortunately but I loved my 3 hours up the hill by myself walking around. Peaceful and Tranquil and a beautiful part of NZ

Cafe
Apr. 2019 • Couples
The Cafe at Orton Bradly park has a charming ambiance. We had an evening & ate inside but the outside area is lovely on a fine day. Menu burgers pizza & salads. Great cabinet sweets. It’s an old building and they are yet to sort out heating inside, but apparently it’s on the top of the to do list, however I’d wear a warm layer on a chilly night just in case,

Beautiful Park, Nice Drive
Feb. 2018 • Friends
This is a lovely out of the way park at Charteris Bay. It's gorgeous in Spring, as there are venerable old rhododendrons in flower and it's a lovely place close to but away from the city, for a picnic or barbeque, which you are welcome to do there.
It's a lovely drive round the harbour from Lyttelton to the park, with beautiful views of the harbour and hills.

Winter Time Slip and Slide
Jun. 2018 • Solo
I arrive at the front gate to pay the entry fee, there was no one there and an honesty box operating, which is a bit difficult if you don’t have the right change.

Purpose of the visit was to use the tracks to get up to Mt Herbert. It was a cool winters day and perfect for the views at the top of the hills. It had been raining in the days leading up to the trek. I headed south on the Tablelands and then the Faulkner Tracks to go to the a Packhorse Hut. From the start it appeared that the track was not used much and maintenance appeared to be a rare and ancient thing. In some places there were trees down over the track and they had been lying there some time. Markers were generally adequately spaced. A number of locations in the bush the track was overgrown and I had to push through the vegetation. Views from the track were good, bush was sparse and not that great.

Then headed north from the hut to Mt Herbert. It was steep and tough going on the section behind Mt Bradley, the track was reasonably well maintained, but much better than within Orton Bradley. Higher foot traffic no doubt helps. The highlight of the day was the views from the Te-Ara track managed by DOC. Views from Mt Herbert from Kaikoura down to Timaru were awesome.

I then took the track back down to Orton Bradley via the Mt Herbert track. The top half was easy going four wheel drive track, slippery and boggy in places. Further down into the valley the going was a lot harder with tracks badly cut up by cattle and flowing waterways, it was an actual slip and slide. Not fun to walk down. In some places marker posts were missing and I had to search for the route. All of the areas through the bush were slippery horrible messes. Often the mud and/or water was ankle height. At one point the track was overgrown with gorse, with no option other than to push through it. One section of the track was over an actual land slip. There was a river crossing with no bridge, and following the rain, it was not fun to cross water to knee height.

All up it was an eight hour round trip.

Paid well over the entrance fee when leaving to help them with their maintenance. They need it!

Don’t bother with these tracks in the winter, stick with the DOC ones.

Fantastic park

We visited the organic dairy farm here, which was amazing. The organic raw milk was absolutely delicious! There is a wonderful playground for the kids to play at, including flying foxes. We will definitely be back again

It's muddy but magnificent on the upper tracks
Mar. 2018 • Couples
Judging from previous reviews, many visitors walk no further than Big Rock along the valley bottom.

But if you have a couple of hours to spare, it's well worth climbing to one of the upper tracks for fantastic views.

The most panoramic stretch we found was heading west from the top of Magnificent Gully to Hunter Gully. Your climb is rewarded by stunning views across the bay.

Be careful not to overshoot at Hunter Gully. It's easily done if you don't follow the blue marker posts down into the woods.

And be warned that the path down Hunter Gully can be extremely swampy in places. You need to wear proper walking boots. Trainers will not do. I would also recommend taking a walking pole.

The path through the woods up Magnificent Gully is also quite steep and potentially slippery.
