Good spot to watch surfing or surf

Good spot to have a bite to eat and drink from the food truck. Great place for dog walking. Entertaining people watching spot. Plenty of surfers in the water but slow going.

Visited from UK. Travelling round NZ with daughter who's living and working here. Only here for one night then onto South Island but would, like to stay longer next time I'm over. Love Wellington and the harbour ! If I was to be able to live in NZ I Think Wellington is the place I'd choose.

One of the nicest beach in Wellington. The sunsets are usually stunning. If you like surfing it is the only good spot in Wellington!

We found the Spruce Goose spacious, organised and efficient. It was early evening and we were allowed to choose where we wanted, next to an open window with views across the bay and airport runway. In spite of the latter - aircraft noise was minimal. The waitress was friendly and informative, fetched our drinks immediately and gave us enough time... More

Headed for a visit early evening during the week. Caught the sunshine and had a lovely walk along the beach. Enjoyed watching the world go by and watching all the planes take off and land. Worth wandering along to see the 'middle of middle earth' sign. Seems a good spot to walk your dogs. Just chill out for a while... More

Close to the airport, Lyall Bay has cafes and kids playgrounds and you can watch planes takeoff and land at Wellington airport from the beach. Close to the airport retail precinct as well for shopping, and Bunnings nearby.

We stayed in the Lyall Bay area and were pleasantly surprised that there is a nice walk along the bay. It is very scenic and even though we did not see any surfers on the days we took our walks we did see kite surfers.

Lyall Bay is a sandy beach and close to Wellington airport and the CBD. It has smooth surface, small to medium surf and does not drop off which is why it is popular with surfers and body borders learning to surf or body board. Surf breaks are at the eastern (airport) end where there is also a sea wall which... More
