A quiet part of Wellington

A brilliant small community served by the number 1 bus. A great coastal drive that goes past and close to the airport.

Island Bay is very popular and we got the impression those who ran the shops etc all knew they were in competition with each other so, in general, standards were high.

We spent a couple of weeks staying in Island Bay and loved it. Close to the CBD for a couple of days seeing attractions or shopping, but an independent community with a small town feel. Fabulous walks up on the ridge or around the bays. Great little restored cinema. A couple of great coffee places and all you need to... More

Island bay started out life as a fishing village for local people and over the years has become a sought after place to live. Here there are Cafe's, Restaurants, Parks, Gardens, look out points and places of interest. In the farthest part of Island bay they have built a large toilet complex which also has running water and a sewerage... More

I always take out-of-town/overseas visitors to this little gem of an attraction. It's so much fun being able to touch some of the marine life, watch the faces of the children, see the resident octopus being fed. The volunteers who work there (including youngsters) are very knowledgable and I love hearing about how the sea creatures wind up there and... More

When the weather is fine, go take a walk around the beaches and paths around Island bay, sample the delicious fish and chips from the local shop and enjoy your day!

Take a walk along the coast, play at the park, go see a film and then visit the shops with great cafes and pubs and restaurants.

Island Bay is a lovely little suburb on Wellington's south coast. On a clear day, there are picture perfect views of the island and even out to the South Island from certain areas. There are a couple of nice bush walks around where you can enjoy views out to the South Island from the top as well. The shops area... More

This is one of the best walk treks for those with families as dotted along the beach front are small cafe that helps break the trek to manageable chunks. Whilst the rocky beach may not appeal to beach swimmers it offers an adventure for younger kids looking out for creatures like crab caught in the pools created by the rocks.... More
