A beautiful bay with a busy restaurant (for sale) on the waterfront! Highly recommended if you like a buzzing cafe!

Island Bay is a coastal suburb of Wellington with decent restaurants. Island is a beautiful little fishing village.

I love the time at Island Bay. There are decent restaurant and the marine reserve is worth visiting on a sunny day! We can see quite a lot of people going with kids and dogs. The marine reserve would need a long walk but the view is stunning!
We went there by bus and it isn't hard at all. Just check the bus time table beforehand.

Island is a wonderful little fishing village, settled by Italians initially, that has now become part of a marine reserve. It has a movie theater, supermarket, lots of eateries and a couple of bars. Excellent beach for humans and dogs, great park for the kids.

Whatever the weather the South Coast and Island Bay is worth visiting. The only problem is there pub's are rubbish and the restaurants not much better - with the honourable exception of the Beach Kiosk.

We wandered down to the beach of Island Bay on a beautiful sunny day , we were geocaching and found eccentric buildings ... and some people ... Loved the wild coast with the architecture up on the hills , great atmosphere .

Such a picturesque spot Even though there’s many bays in Wellington this one is lovely and to add to it you’ve got the beach house cafe situated there which is awesome

We spent the afternoon enjoying the sun at Island Bay - it was postcard perfect with the boats in the water & the sun shining.

There is also a local movie theatre and a nice selection of shops and eateries.

Great dive shop and shore dive spot and great cafes along here.
The cafes on a stormy afternoon are a great place to hang out

We have lived in Wellington for over 25 years so might be a bit biased but Island Bay is wonderful. The beach and Shortland Park are great for kids and for adults. Lots to see. The southern coast is wonderful to walk around and the boat house is open on Sundays for visiting. Great for a hands on experience kids. Around further are good rock pools. The water is always cold but that doesn’t stop people swimming on a good day. There are public toilets at the park and the bus terminates there too. Come for a look and explore when in Island Bay.
