It is interesting to see the old gravestones from the 1800s and see the rough times the original settlers faced.....so many died at a young age, families lost many children....it really strikes home as you read the gravestones how hard it must have been in a time before modern medicine. The path back from the Botanic Garden goes through the center of the cemetery. It was well maintained and had a paved walkway through it. Unfortunately, though, they put a freeway through the center of the cemetery. They built a walkway over the freeway so you can get to the other side.

The graves of Bolton Street tell wonderful stories about the history of Wellington - it is a quiet intriguing place to be - an oasis in the city

We walked through the cemetery on the way back to the city after visiting the Botanical gardens. The cemetery is nicely kept, and is interesting, but we didn't spend much time looking at the details to be honest!

On you way down to street level from the botanic garden you will pass through the cemetery. This cemetery is likely more interesting than the Botanic Garden itself. Nice quiet place on yor way down to town.

Interesting but disturbing that old graves moved to make way for motorway. If you take the cable car up the hill and walk back to the city via the botannical gardens you walk through this interesting and historic graveyard

This is an extremely old cemetery which has been rearranged in recent years to allow for the Wellington motorway. The cemetery contains monuments and memorials to famous and ordinary folk from over many years. When the motorway was developed, some graves had to be moved and bodies reinterred as the motorway now divides it. The cemetery is divided into various... More

I used one of the available pamphlets to take a tour through the cemetery and to learn more about its old inhabitants, well worth doing.
