The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car....

The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

This would be called a funicular in the U.S. or other places in the world, but whatever, it was an efficient way to get from the Botanic Garden to the center city. We originally wanted to ride it up to the Botanic Garden, but the wait was over an hour, so we Ubered up (it was cheap and quick --... More

Wonderful history with modern day use providing a great experience. 2nd time in 40 years so a great reminiscent journey. The museum was awesome. And spectacular views.

A nice walk from the Te Papa Museum brought us to the station on Lambton Quay. We waited longer in line to buy tickets than we did for the cable car. The lightshows in the tunnels are a wonderful touch to the awesome ride. Upon exiting the cable car be sure to visit the museum and take the longer path... More

A great way to see Wellington and learn some history. Get in early if you are on a cruise as it will get very crowded.

We got on the cable car this morning as all of the travel guides mention it and recommend it. We queued for tickets but only for about 5 mins and then queued to get on, again less than 10 mins. The price was pretty good too at $4 single (we were walking down). There were some lights in a small... More

It's a shame the old cars with the outside seats have gone - but there is still one in the museum at the top - check it out. Check to see if there is a cruise ship in town before you venture to the cable car - queues can be up to 45 min long for a 7min ride. Go... More

Hi there, thank you for visiting the Cable Car. Yes, during the height of our cruise ship season we are particularly busy during the morning, so some pre-planning before this will help avoid some of the longer queues. Or as you've found, visiting later in the day tend to be less busy. As part of the Wellington's public transport network,... More

I know that there is much more to the cable car than it just being a tram ride but as someone from Melbourne who catches a tram daily, I wasn't too excited about it. You can get amazing views once at the top and there is even a bit of a light show along the way. The ride only lasts... More

Took the cable car up and back, I would recommend you take it up and walk down. Went to see the Botanical Gardens while up there and also a beautiful view over the city and water. Just OK, very short ride, but you go through a couple of tunnels with lights so if you are subject to migraines or seizures,... More

A great way to travel to the botanical gardens, if you don't fancy the hike up that is. A short ride on the historic Wellington cable car is a must for any visitor to Wellington.

Perfect for cruise passengers. Fun trip on the cable car to take in the panoramic views. Then, stroll back to town through the beautiful botanical gardens!
