The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

It was an interesting way to get to where we were going. Nothing special, compared to cable cars in Christchurch and Queenstown, but still worthwhile and value for money.

No insult to the cable car, but it was just a way to get from A to B. A bit pricy for such a short ride especially when the walk through the gardens is so pleasant. Essentially a way of getting to the center of...More

A must trip while in Wellington. Nice cafe at the top and access to Botanic Gardens and get free shuttle bus to Zealandia

I recommend taking the cable car from the CBD up to the botanical gardens. Look into the cable car museum at the top to learn of its history before taking a stroll down through the gardens back into the city.

Such a Wellington experience, it's a must do. At the top, you can walk in the gardens, go to the cafe (gelato is great, so are the flat whites and the view is excellent), or visit the Carter Observatory and planetarium. If you go to...More

Join the old wellington cable car from the centre. The cost is NZ $4 one way. Suggest only get the ride up as it is a lovely walk via meandering path down the mountain. This cable car is steeped in nostalgia. Well worth a visit...More

Hi there, thank you for visiting! A one way ticket up is the ideal choice for most people because you can walk down through the Botanic Garden and end up at the Parliament Building.

Well I went for the experience of the ride up and back. Good thing I did as at the top and a short walk away is the Wellington Obervatory which has daily showings. Overall an enjoyable afternoon.

Hi there, the walk back down through the Botanic Garden (following the Pohutukawa flower tiles) takes approximately 40 minutes and is mostly a downhill walk. You'll end up at the Reserve Bank which is opposite the Parliament... More

As a NZ resident I was able to use my seniors gold card. You can take the car back down or walk, or even catch a bus at the top back to the city. It's certainly very cheap and well worth the trip to the top.

We had no queue travelling mid-morning on a week day. There was not cruise ship in town though, so perhaps this would change things.
