Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We did the Half Day Locations Tour and we had an absolute blast. Our guide, "Irish Dave" as he called himself, was a fountain of knowledge with tons of interesting titbits about not only the filming of LOTR but also about Wellington and current going's on. We started in the morning and by the time we got to lunch (we were provided with muffins and tea) we had seen where the hobbits found their short-cut to mushrooms and hid from the Ringwraight. We also visited Rivendell, Isengard and one of the many River Anduin Locations. We had an absolute blast with Dave who even provided us with props for a little wizard garden stroll.

Wayne with Rover Lord Of The Rings Tours was a great tourguide. He was outgoing and easy to talk to. He was knowledgable of the movies and talked about his time as an extra on one of the films which provided an interesting perspective. He was quite friendly and the tour felt like friends having a day out rather than a more structured experience.

We were in Wellington a couple of weeks ago and had booked a tour of Weta Workshop. The shuttle bus to Weta left early and left us behind.Luckily Phil, of Rover Rings, offered to give us a lift so that we could make our appointment. Not only did we arrive on time but Phil was a knowledgeable and charming host. Thanks Phil!

Confirmed the booking for 0830 hotel pickup then they straight up didn't turn up for the full day tour. Phoned at 0850 and they said they'd lost the booking and the tour had left. Even though it was before 9 (their stated Wellington pick up time) they said they weren't able to pick me up. Offered no apology. Had arranged my time in Wellington around this tour so left a sick taste in the mouth.

Okay, so I read the other reviews, and saw complaints from people who were disappointed that they didn't get to see actual sets. This is a tour of LOCATIONS around Wellington, and it will especially make sense to people who have watched Peter Jackson's extended edition "appendices" -- If anything, I was MORE impressed to be shown how the filmmakers took a simple quarry and transformed it into Helm's Deep. If you want to see the full sets and CGI, watch the movies. If you want to have fun and learn how the magic of filmmaking really works and spend a day with other LoTR fans (some die-hard, and others just curious), then take this tour. My almost-12-year-old daughter and I did the full day tour with Randall and had a blast. We were with 7 other people all from different countries and of different ages, and we liked it better than Hobbiton, because of the personal touch. Lunch was fabulous, tea in Rivendell was fun, and the Weta tour (yes, we got the tour, not just the movie) was brilliant. On the plane ride back to California, my daughter and I enjoyed watching the trilogy again and marveling over how we had actually been in those places.

We are huge Lord of the Rings nerds, and took multiple tours of Lord of the Rings filming locations over our tour of the two islands. We both felt that this tour was the best of our whole trip. Grant, our guide, was kind, funny, knowledgeable and about as nerdy as us. He told us many great stories from filming, and let us spend as much time as possible exploring each location. We loved the laminated photos the tour provided so that we could envision each scene at its location. Our lunch at Scorch-o-Rama was delicious and our tour at Weta was incredible as well. Everyone on our tour seemed to have a great time. We would recommend the full day tour – you’ll hit all the great LotR spots around Wellington in a day – and it’s a day you’ll be talking about long after!

We did the half day tour. We visited Mount Victoria, a film location trail nearby that didnt resemble the scenes much and then the Weta caves for the last 2 hours. All locations are open to the public to visit without being on a tour. For almost $300 for 2 adults and 2 children I didn't see the value and would have rathered just visit Weta on our own.

While I understand that this company is competitively priced, i was very underwhelmed at the sites we saw during this tour, thus I feel there are other things to do in Wellington instead of a LOTR tour.

Our tour guide was very friendly and chatty, however we encountered a few problems. First off, we were told that we would be picked up from our hotel at 8:35AM and we woke up early and got breakfast and was ready in the hotel 10 minutes early. We were not picked up until after 9AM as they had last minute bookings and other passengers were not timely picked up, causing us to wait nearly half an hour.

While on the tour, our guide took us to Victoria Peak and told us some great facts about the area. The view from the peak was fantastic! We then went to one of the major scenes of the first LOTR movie, which was easily noticeable from the film and again our guide had interesting stories and provided us with little known facts about the location. We then went to Weta Cave and things started to go a bit sour. After completing our tour, we waited for what felt like an hour waiting for a credit card machine. Instead of making us wait for a long time while we were hungry, it would have been nice if the other driver had met us at the cafe where we had lunch. The lunch spot had a special menu, however there was no LOTR inspired food on the menu.

After lunch we went to the Anduin River and the guide was going off on tangents about other movies and characters and we spent a long time just standing and listening to the guide before heading back to the bus. After this we went to Rivendell, which was a fun spot and did a little walk and heard about the how they were planning to build a facility at the location. We had a snack and drink and then went to Isengard, which was quite underwhelming (at least to me because it was a frisbee golf park and looked nothing like what the movie portrays). We spent what felt like an hour here and due to the morning mishap and waiting for the card machine, we ended up at the hotel later than expected. We were briefly shown Helms Deep and Minas Tirith locations from the bus, which again you would have no idea any filming happened there. While the tour delivered on what it promised, I just feel it was not worth the full day we had in Wellington and certainly not worth the cost.

For other Wellington visitors, I'd recommend not doing a LOTR tour as there are better things you can do with your time and money. Please note I am a lord of the rings fan and this review is my opinion. I will reiterate that the tour delivers what it states, however not worth the cost.

I am a LOTR fan. My wife has not seen one movie. We both loved this tour. Beautiful locations all around Wellington. Lots of information about the books, the movies, and New Zealand itself. Our small group was especially nice at WETA so we felt like we could ask questions and not feel rushed. Manon, our guide, did an amazing job. That she herself was a true fan came clearly through. She was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and even offered to take pictures when needed. The themed lunch was in reality a themed menu of a normal, but very tasty, lunch. No complaints at all for this one.

The tour was really well organized and, more importantly, great fun. There was a terrific mix of beautiful and recognizable scenery, Weta Workshop wonders, and LOTR trivia. Our tour guide Dave told us tales of his exploits as an extra on LOTR and gave us background on all the places we visited. There was plenty of time for pictures and our group had a lovely esprit de corps. Would highly recommend it to anyone who loved the books and especially the movies. We learned lots about New Zealand as well. Lunch and conversation with other members of the tour were a plus.

Hi Jet81624, Thanks for your review. We always try to find a good balance between everything we do in order to cater for everyone's interests. We've been lucky enough to work with several people over the years who had experience working on the movies, so we've managed to gain a lot of insight into the production that you won;t be able to find elsewhere. Thanks, Rover Rings Tours
