Amazing staff. There is no way the service could be better. Ambience and decor stunning. Music fantastic. Everything simply perfect. I was introduced to this bar on a trip to Wellington a few years ago and it’s now a must visit every time I’m there. Took some friends there this last trip and unfortunately it ruined every other bar we visited. Nothing else compares!

A classic speakeasy hidden up a flight of stairs. Excellent drinks served by great staff in a cool space.
1920’s decor, leather chairs and knowledgeable staff.
We loved sitting at the bar and chatting with the bartenders while they mixed the drinks. Matt was great to talk to and all the stuff shared places to visit in Wellington.
And the drinks taste great.

Absolutely fantastic hidden gem. The personable and knowledgeable staff make this lounge the best place for a decent high quality cocktail in Wellington. Kudos to Devon and the team. We will be back!

Firstly this is a bar, not a restaurant.....and a pedigree one at that! My girlfriend and I visited Hawthorn while staying the night in Wellington. Sadly we were only in town one evening so wanted to maximise our experience. On entering, the bar has a real classy speakeasy feel to it. Its very compact although it doesn't feel too small. The decor has a real feel of nostalgia to it, while also being rich and warming. As a bartender myself we opted to sit at the bar to take the opportunity to talk to the staff. This proved to be a wise decision. Our bartender Pete, was incredibly knowledgable and was more than happy to indulge our questions. The drinks menu was varied and interesting, a real drinker delight. After a few drinks (including a brilliant Negroni) we asked about where was good for seafood in town. The bartender was really helpful, even going as far as txting his colleague at the recommended place to help secure us a table!
A fantastic bar! Definitely a highlight of our stay. Yet to find a bar in NZ to rival it quite frankly.

Place has nice ambiance - enough lighting to see your friends and low key music.the current Christmas muffet menu is sweet (literally as the drinks all have tons of sweetness).but its just as much fun to tell them what flavors you want and let them create one for you. Definitely my favorite relaxed drinking place in NZ. I'll be going back.
Its above pan De muerto Mexican restaurant! Useful as finding it otherwise can be an exercise in trying to find and read numbers-street signs.staircase to right leads to it. Across from Harvey Norman.

We stopped in here before our dinner at Logan Brown and were quite happy we did so! The cocktails are inventive but delicious, I had their take on an old fashioned accented with a local spiced rum. Quite different but enjoyable. I asked the bartender for a whiskey based drink and to surprise me. That he did... he broke out a smoker and smoked pinot noir barrel shavings into a jar with what was a classic old fashioned. The smoke flavor was very subtle but complemented the drink perfectly.
I would definitely stop in here, if nothing else than for the bartenders creative approach to cocktails.

My husband and I absolutely LOVED the Hawthorn Lounge. It had a true speakeasy feel (we even passed it the first time around because the sign on the wall is very hard to see at night, but that made it more exciting to find), and the decor fit the theme perfectly. The service was very prompt, and the drinks were FANTASTIC. I highly recommend the Birth of Venus.
If you’ve been to Hemingway’s in Prague (our favorite bar in the world), this bar is extremely similar.

If you are looking for somewhere in Wellington to have a wee drink before or after dinner, The Hawthorne Lounge would take a lot of beating. Set in a speakeasy environment, they have a wonderful range of aperitif drinks and the most professional bar staff I have ever seen. No reading drink menus, they know it all. Amazing. They can be making 5 or 6 drinks and ask how you day was without missing a beat.
Highly recommended.
